Giuliani Is Said to Seek $20,000 a Day Payment for Trump Legal Work

Source: New York Times

Rudolph W. Giuliani, who has helped oversee a string of failed court challenges to President Trump’s defeat in the election, asked the president’s campaign to pay him $20,000 a day for his legal work, multiple people briefed on the matter said.

The request stirred opposition from some of Mr. Trump’s aides and advisers, who appear to have ruled out paying that much, and it is unclear how much Mr. Giuliani will ultimately be compensated.

Since Mr. Giuliani took over management of the legal effort, Mr. Trump has suffered a series of defeats in court and lawyers handling some of the remaining cases have dropped out.

A $20,000-a-day rate would have made Mr. Giuliani, the former New York City mayor who has been Mr. Trump’s personal lawyer for several years, among the most highly compensated attorneys anywhere.

For a 31 day month, one January. We met because he dated two law school students I also dated. I was amazed that as a student I could successfully compete against someone who earned an amazing $31,000 per year, which seemed really rich to me back then. He had a beat up old car with one front bumper with a different color than the rest of the car. Too busy to get a new car I think. He told me that the Beverly Hills police stopped him every single day as he drove home. That really pissed him off so he left business litigation to do public interest law, often suing the police. I have not seen him in almost 40 years but happened to see this week that he has won many awards for public interest law, that he is on the executive board of amnesty international, worked for the ACLU, that he has really got even with those damn profiling cops.

Rudy’s fees didn’t surprise me because later I dated another woman from my law school whose firm would sometimes bill a client a million dollars per week. In mid 1980’s money.

A law firm in Beverly Hills billed at times a million per week. That was not crooked. The clients agreed to it, because it was worth it. If you increase the odds of a merger happening by five percent that can be worth $50 million. In the case of the law firm I am thinking of their extensive connections with basically all the important figures in the entertainment industry facilitated getting to yes. That firm for instance in one paid Lawrence Tribe one million dollars on behalf of a client to write a brief to be filed with the Supreme Court in support of their client. Tribe was influential with the Supremes so he was worth it. How many hours did Tribe spend on it? One firm in that case is now worth, well to prevent identification, far more than $25 billion. If they had lost they might now be bankrupt. Lawyers are not crooks when they charge such fees. They are just being paid what they are worth.

Tue Nov 17, 2020, 07:16 PM

The person at Walmart wanted to pay Olsen $200 more per hour than he asked, which was rumored to be 2000 per hour, because they wanted Olsen to wake up thinking about a Walmart case important to Walmart, and not about any other matter he might work on. If you hire Skadden Arps to fight off an unexpected corporate takeover of your firm you will surely be paying them millions per week. https://abovethelaw.com/2016/06/2000-an-hour-lawyers-thats-one-way-to-fund-salary-increases/

And I assume Rudy’s fee includes at least three other lawyers doing research, interviewing witnesses, etc.
