Pelosi reaffirms that next term as speaker will be her last
Source: Roll Call
Ahead of the 116th Congress, Pelosi cut a deal with a handful of members threatening to vote against her for speaker on the floor. To win their support, the California Democrat agreed to allow the caucus to vote on proposed term limits for the top three Democratic leaders and to abide by the proposal herself regardless of whether it was adopted.
The term limit plan, which would have limited the top three leaders from serving beyond the 117th Congress, was not brought before the caucus as scheduled, amid a partial government shutdown. The members pushing for the term limits proposal agreed to drop it indefinitely, but noted they could always bring it up again if needed.
In the nearly two years since Pelosi cut that deal, shes declined to answer questions about whether shed uphold her commitment to give up the speakers gavel after the 117th Congress. But at a press conference Wednesday, shortly after the Democratic Caucus nominated Pelosi to serve as speaker again, she answered the question.

(51,093 posts)So it was an easy deal for her. When she does step down I hope there is someone as well qualified as her that takes over.

(1,652 posts)Neither is Joe. though he gets attacked as such. Like racists, ageists dont know even the basics about their targets.
The average age of newly elected Senators in 2018 was 58.1. They are Boomers. Trump is among the oldest Boomers. Yeah hes refusing to retire, but he only started the job four years ago.

Those of us born between 1927/8 and 1945, sandwiched between the Greatest and the Boomers.

(1,652 posts)I have read. Its something to divide us.
A lot of Boomers cant afford to retire. The cost of living doesnt go down, and wages dont keep up. Repub-driven financial collapses and job insecurity have taken away the old security. Some people prosper but its not the rule.
Its true that things get steadily worse for each generation. But just puking up resentment at earlier generations is pointless. People need to push for change instead.

(15,325 posts)Same with a few of our most senior leaders.
They stayed on because of the threat of President Trump & the Repub Senate.
The House had a near impossible task, but played masterfully with the few cards they were dealt.
I hope this Biden admin is a far easier finale' to a grand & successful career in service.
America is honored to have had such dedicated leadship.
Congrats Speaker Pelosi & team.
You've served our country with honor ~

(11,257 posts)She obviously can stay in the House, but there's not much recent precedent of a Speaker staying on as a "regular" Member of Congress after voluntarily stepping down.
I'd assume that when she steps down as Speaker, that she'll retire from Congress. That said, you never know!
