'It has to stop': Georgia official calls on Trump to 'stop inspiring' death threats over election

Source: USA Today

Joey Garrison 11:26pm Dec. 1, 2020

WASHINGTON — A top election official with the Georgia Secretary of State's Office on Tuesday called on President Donald Trump to condemn and "stop inspiring" recent threats of violence as the state finishes a second recount of the presidential election.

"It has all gone too far," said Gabriel Sterling, Georgia's voting system implementation manager, raising his voice. "All of it."

Visibly angry, Sterling spent several minutes of an afternoon news conference describing threats targeting state election officials and workers. He said a 20-year-old tech employee in Gwinnett County received death threats and was made the subject of a noose image disseminated online Tuesday that read he should be "hung for treason."

"It has to stop. Mr. President, you have not condemned these actions or this language," Sterling said. "Senators, you have not condemned this language or these actions. This has to stop. We need you to step up. And if you're going to take a position of leadership, show some."

The senators Sterling referenced are Georgia's two Republican U.S. senators, David Perdue and Kelly Loeffler, who are running in runoff elections on Jan. 5 that could decide control of the Senate.

Matthew Brown USA TODAY

An attorney for the Trump campaign said the federal government's former top cybersecurity chief should be "shot" for describing the U.S. election as secure.

Joe diGenova condemned Christopher Krebs, former director of the Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency, on Monday's episode of "The Howie Carr Show."

"That guy is a class A moron," diGenova said. "He should be drawn and quartered, taken out at dawn and shot."

The comments were syndicated on Carr's radio show, as well as aired on the cable channel Newsmax..............

Chickens coming home to roost! GA Election Officials ANGER! Watch the video. The feeeels!

Trumpsters threaten officials and their families.

With Trump's implicit encouragement.

They even threaten ordinary workers and their families.

This is what cold, hard fury sounds like.

Even the walk to the podium was a man-with-a purpose.

One of the very few republicans to speak out against Trump and his supporters' credible use of threats and violence

He clearly put American lives at risk with hate speech and it occurred while he was in office.
The notion that he can't be tried during that time is patently bullshit.
If he directly committed a murder, strangled/ shot/ smothered/ sawed someone in half, would it make sense to wait till the end of his term to prosecute?
It's time to put that 'I'm too important and consequently above-the-law' bullshit to rest.
The last 4 years would have been different if we had.

But really, there’s only one variable that’s skewing everything so dangerously off the rails, and that’s trump himself.

We have always been a divided nation, folks. Always. I really love when I hear people say “we’re more divided now than at any time in history”

That’s a crock of utter horseshit, and people who say that would do well to read a little bit of history. We’ve always been this divided about damned near everything, from whether we should break from England or not, to whether you can own a slave, to a national bank, etc.

And yes, folks have been killed over their political differences before, not just threatened to be shot in the head. We’ve always had bare knuckle politics in this nation. The difference right now is the White House and it’s administration have taken up cheerleading for armed resistance, which isn’t as common.

I’m nearing 60. I have always been aware that I’ve been blessed to live in a nation, and in a period of history that did not require me to take up arms and defend my ideals, my freedom, my way of life. I always knew that those of us born in this age were fortunate, and I’ve always hoped that it would last for my entire life.

But that’s what we’re really seeing here, not the divide, that’s always been there, what’s new is the willingness to risk throwing it all away, just to be a winner. What’s new is a large part of a party that would be okay with violence as a political tool. Being egged on by a man who is about to lose it all. I have lots of ideas about why, but that’s for another post.

It’s beginning to look like the salad days of America are over for awhile. There’s not much concord here right now, and I expect that we will devolve into chaotic violence before this is all over. I just don’t see a peaceful solution with the republican refusal to accept any compromise. The important questions are how bad, for how long, and what is America going to look like once we’ve come out the other side.

Don’t have any idea what the answers to those questions are right now, but maybe we should give a little thought to them, because I’m pretty sure it’s comin’.
