Austin mayor stressed residents 'need to stay home.' He was vacationing in Cabo at the time
Source: Austin American-Statesman
In early November, as health officials warned of a impending COVID-19 spike, Austin Mayor Steve Adler hosted an outdoor wedding and reception with 20 guests for his daughter at a trendy hotel near downtown.
The next morning, Adler and seven other wedding attendees boarded a private jet bound for Cabo San Lucas, Mexico, where they vacationed for a week at a family timeshare.
One night into the trip, Adler addressed Austin residents in a Facebook video: We need to stay home if you can. This is not the time to relax. We are going to be looking really closely. ... We may have to close things down if we are not careful.
In hosting the wedding and traveling internationally, Adler said he broke neither his own order or those established by Gov. Greg Abbott.
But at the time, the city was recommending people not gather in groups of more than 10, and the day after Adlers departure, Austins health authority warned that its important that we drive the (COVID-19) numbers down in advance of Thanksgiving.

(6,938 posts)But this is not an awkwardly-staged incident. Its a violation of the public trust when in the midst of a public emergency.
He chose his family responsibilities, as is the excuse for many.
But he wont help his legacy by blowing it off as if he doesnt understand how important it is to otherswho may have cancelled wedding plans at his urging.
It wont go away until he recognizes and addresses the issue as the fail it is.

Fucking up is "Nuts! I totally forgot about/ignored/dismissed the raging pandemic where i live, and all that I've said and done about staying safe by staying home, and went on a vacation trip in spite of my position as an elected official and defying everything we know about COVID!"

(3,042 posts)And the ruling class will ALWAYS go by a different set of rules. The CA gov had a dinner with friends at French Laundry. Denver mayor went away for a holiday. Guess the Austin mayor felt the same need.
Just because they are politicians doesnt mean they are better or more deserving of a break.
