Mexican doctor hospitalized after receiving COVID-19 vaccine

Source: Reuters

MEXICO CITY (Reuters) - Mexican authorities said they are studying the case of a 32-year-old female doctor who was hospitalized after receiving the Pfizer-BioNTech COVID-19 vaccine.

The doctor, whose name has not been released, was admitted to the intensive care unit of a public hospital in the northern state of Nuevo Leon after she experienced seizures, difficulty breathing and a skin rash.

the vaccine in the USA had a reaction like this.

You have to weigh that against the amount of people who will not end up in the ICU or dead from the virus.

Consider mentioning that if you post this elsewhere.

One a young male doctor in Brooklyn, I think. All under investigation. One possibility is that some medical personnel have become hyper-sensitized to PEG ( polyethylene glycol) thru contact with medical supplies containing it.

1 in a million chance is a chance I think people should take.

I have had a whole lot of patients on Miralax and never seen a reaction from that. Poly ethylene glycol 3350 is Miralax.

I will admit there is always new information to learn.

Also, severe reactions happen with the flu vaccine. They also are very rare. So I think this is to be expected.

Since all the persons suffering anaphylaxis have been medical providers, the PEG hypersensitivity hypothesis has been put forth. We’ll have to wait to see. Meanwhile, nearly everybody needs to be vaccinated. Any risk from monitored anaphylaxis is far less than from the virus.

there have been a few cases of anaphylaxis but none that resulted in hospital admissions until this doctor. If you have a history of anaphylaxis to anything I would recommend getting it done at your doctor's office / hospital.

a severe anaphylactic reaction- it sucks and I hope she is OK.

However, people can get those from bee stings and eating shrimp. Some kids have reactions to peanuts.

This is NOT a reason to avoid the vaccine.

And I hope it doesn't dissuade people from getting immunized. We've been giving the vaccine in the clinic where I work and we've had two "A" alerts over the PA system that I've heard myself. Neither amount to much, just hives and one syncopal episode, but you don't know where it's going at first so you have to alert just in case.

... with an epi-pen in her purse or pocket. It seems most of the people with bad reactions knew they were severely allergic and carried medicine with them.

Then, would a doctor with known allergies take this vaccine? She'd have to weigh the dangers of an allergic reaction with the dangers of not being vaccinated. Interesting choice.

I hope she recovers quickly, and gets the second shot in a hospital setting.

severe allergic reactions. Sounds like that news hasn't gotten around or is not being acted on...
I wish this doctor a speedy and complete recovery. If this affected person has no such history
then we're all at risk.

If it's possible that 5% of the doses may not be effective, then up to 100,000 of the 2 million injections already given could prove to be problematic. So far, only two cases (Alaska and Mexico) have been reported in the media. Unfortunately, this will deter some people from getting the vaccine, and give the anti-vaxxers another argument against the shots.
