Trump administration misses census data deadline, eyes March handover to Congress

Source: The Hill

BY JOHN BOWDEN - 01/12/21 08:43 AM EST

Data from the 2020 Census will likely not be provided to Congress until March due to analysis delays caused by various global events as well as problems with some of the information collected, the Trump administration said on Monday after missing a deadline.

The Associated Press reported that Justice Department attorneys told a court that it will take until at least March 6 to fix anomalies discovered last year during an already shortened analysis period.

Experts had warned for months that the Trump administration was not giving adequate time for both data collection and analysis in a year complicated by both the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic and wildfires across the western U.S. that forced thousands to flee their homes last year.

Lawmakers have accused the Commerce Department, which oversees the Census Bureau, of stonewalling their attempts at oversight while hiding information about delays affecting the 2020 Census. In December, the House Oversight Committee moved to subpoena Commerce Secretary Wilbur Ross over the issue.

This is an opportunity to scrub the data before accepting it. Re-do any excluded areas or people. lagomorph777 Jan 2021 #3

It's actually better since adjustments can be made. The count was way off so I expect that there will be some kind of recount.

Philly challenged the 2008/2009 "estimates" and I know it might be horrible this year given all the challenges of the pandemic and getting the door-to-door verifications done while those were being hamstrung by the administration.

The city desperately attempted a large media campaign for Census response that was ultimately lost in the middle of both the "Wear a mask/Social Distance" campaign and the primary/general election campaigns. It was just a fucking nightmare this past year.

It’ll just continue to block efforts to eliminate the racial gerrymander.
