Freshman GOP Sen. Tommy Tuberville: Biden inauguration should have been delayed because of COVID-19

Source: USA Today

WASHINGTON – Days before President-elect Joe Biden’s inauguration, Sen. Tommy Tuberville, R-Ala., said the event should have been postponed because of the COVID-19 pandemic, even though Jan. 20 is enshrined in the Constitution as the date for the transfer of presidential power.

“We probably could have had a swearing-in and done an inauguration a little later on after we got this virus behind us a little bit. But again, we’re talking about Washington, D.C.,” Tuberville told Birmingham TV station CBS 42.

The Constitution’s 20th Amendment requires that the terms of a new president and vice president begin “at noon on the 20th day of January.”

Tuberville, a freshman who was sworn into office Jan. 3, was one of six Republican senators who objected on Jan. 6 to the affirmation by Congress of Biden’s Electoral College win – a vote that took place hours after a violent pro-Trump mob stormed the Capitol.

I know U.S. daily new cases, 7 day moving average, has gone down a bit lately in the U.S. overall, but the fast-spreading variant is still quite low in numbers in the U.S. like 1 per 1000 new cases = the fast-spreading variant(s) (but increasing exponentially in the true meaning of the word). So its kind of a race between that becoming dominant, and vaccinations becoming numerous enough to make the difference. Overall, I read that its likely to get worse until at least March.

So, what do you say, Tommy?

"We probably could wait until after we got this virus behind us a little bit. But again, we’re talking about Washington, D.C.,”

Hmmm. Maybe if was held at a shooting range in Alabama it could go on as scheduled?

Just wondering what the difference is between one of your "rallies" in the midst of a pandemic and the inauguration of the next PRESIDENT, one that "ain't one of your 'good 'ole boys" (as if IQ45 was!)?

Gotta' say - Gohmert's gonna' have a hell-of-a-run for the dumbest person in the U.S Congress!

..given how ignorant he is. Biden becomes president at noon next Wednesday, oath or not. If a 3 day blizzard unexpectedly occurred, halting the proceedings, Roberts could administer the oath remotely, if they were so inclined.

While Trump may have lifted Buchanan and Andrew Johnson out of the presidential sub-cellar after 150 years, Tuberville might just improve the ratings of the box-of-hair.

Seriously. the critical part of what he said is "we could have had a swearing in". That's it. That's the transfer of power. Period. End of story.

That's all that is required under the constitution.

The "inauguration" is a party. woo friggin hoo. It could be held anytime or never at all.

As long as the swearing in happens, the parties could happen later. Sucks, sure. But they would have been very small anyway because of covid.

It's better to use the time to stamp the asshats into the dirt for another 100 years.

PRESS BRIEFINGS

Press Briefing by Press Secretary Kayleigh McEnany

Issued on: December 2, 2020

James S. Brady Press Briefing Room

1:05 P.M. EST

MS. MCENANY: Good afternoon, everyone. The United States Constitution matters even during a pandemic. While Democrat politicians seek to impose draconian restrictions against their citizens, this past week the Supreme Court of the United States had their say on New York State’s capacity restrictions, which restricted the number of attendees allowed in places of worship but not other government-deemed essential businesses.

Justice Gorsuch, in the ruling, said this as he rolled back Governor Cuomo’s restrictions on places of worship. He said, quote, “It is time — past time — to make plain that, while the pandemic poses many grave challenges, there is no world in which the Constitution tolerates color-coded executive edicts that reopen liquor stores and bike shops but shutter churches, synagogues, and mosques.”

Behind me, you will see displayed images of Democrat hypocrisy playing on loop. These images depict the following:

{snip}

This statement from Governor Cuomo strikes at the heart of the issue: Democrats seek control. These images behind me make clear Democrats’ mindset: rules for thee but not for me.

The President stands with you, your freedom, your ability to decide how to best protect your health. We all know how to protect ourselves from COVID-19: wash your hands, socially distance, wear a mask.

But as one federal court put it, “There is no pandemic exception to the Constitution.”

And with that, I’ll take questions.

{snip}
