Joe Biden says he is willing to adjust income thresholds for a fresh wave of stimulus payments

in new relief package
President Joe Biden said on Monday he is open to adjusting the income thresholds for a fresh wave of stimulus checks for Americans, a key demand among some moderate senators reluctant to back his rescue package.
"There is legitimate reason for people to say, 'do you have the lines drawn the exact right way?' Biden said during a press conference. "Should it go to anybody making over x number of dollars? I'm open to negotiate those things."
Biden said he included more stimulus payments in his $1.9 trillion proposal because they drew support from Democrats and some Republicans last year. Former President Donald Trump demanded a higher stimulus payment amount in a frenzied last-minute push in December.
The remarks reflect Biden's willingness to negotiate elements of his rescue package to garner GOP support, though he didn't delve into more specifics. His plan includes a provision for a $1,400 top-up to $600 checks sent out in December, bringing the full amount to $2,000 for many taxpayers.

(54,770 posts)they ought to look at threshold and phaseout. Then make a decision about keeping those thresholds.

(7,326 posts)By limiting who gets it, there is less money flowing up.
The benefit isn't just to individuals in need, though that's where we start.

(3,697 posts)A single filer could have income up to $99K for the first round of stimulus and $198K for a married couple with no kids. Folks with this level of income should not be struggling or facing eviction unless they have made some really bad decisions and choices.

I guess the bad decision would be taking a job in the San Francisco Area?

(7,326 posts)No need to piles of process on top of this IMO. Some people would get money they don't need. Big woop. I'd rather that than people who need help not getting it.

(28,799 posts)and i am so fortunate to be in a position that i do not need that money. I would actually be happy if more money would be directed at lifting others out of poverty.

(19,069 posts)But make sure unemployment is enough. $60K or $120K for couples. But make UE more than $400 for high wage earners whove been laid off.

(4,356 posts)I'm a bit, actually more than a bit peeved. A lot of us have been sick with Covid, including me. Many have died because we are front-line. All the talk of hazard pay for front-line workers has disappeared or is briefly mentioned as something employers should voluntarily do. Well I have news. The vast majority of employers will not give hazard pay a second thought. So now after having risked our lives, many will be asked to forego the stimulus checks. It just doesn't seem right. It's a stick in both eyes.
And just as a disclaimer, I'm not in one of the higher brackets that will likely be excluded but yes, very pissed about the disregard for essential workers.

(11,949 posts)What would help the most, and got us through the spring/summer is reinstated $600 a week unemployment.
I think the is better aimed policy. Plus it boosts demand for $15 an hour minimum wage.

(3,504 posts)Yes, we still get our SS checks, but a few years ago we bought a rental property as a retirement plan to supplement our income. Our two tenants are struggling, and those stimulus checks help them to catch up on the rent they owe - that in turn, helps us. My point is that people have been hurt, even if they themselves haven't lost their jobs.

(6,537 posts)People need money NOW. It is appalling that our elected reps would hold up this deal on the basis that by G-d, no one who doesn't "need" it is going to get any, no matter what it does to the rest of them!
Who the hell cares if some get extra? They bloody well know that they should be handing out at least $2,000 more than what they have been asked to give. They could hand out $5,000 and it wouldn't hurt. $1200 more (or $1400, whatever, I've lost track) is food money, and not everybody is in the business of providing food. Some people need to move merchandise in order to keep their businesses. Who's gonna buy a purse if they are still eating dog food? But, the reps don't realize it because they themselves aren't worried about eating.
These people are disgusting. They should back the Pres 100%. They got off easy.
