Sen. Patrick Leahy hospitalized, condition unknown

Updated at 6:13 p.m.

Sen. Patrick Leahy, D-Vt., was admitted to a hospital in the Washington, D.C., area Tuesday evening, according to spokesperson David Carle.

"This evening, Senator Leahy was in his Capitol office and was not feeling well," Carle said in a written statement. "He was examined in the Capitol by the Attending Physician. Out of an abundance of caution, the Attending Physician recommended that he be taken to a local hospital for observation, where he is now, and where he is being evaluated."

The senator's office did not immediately disclose his condition.

Leahy, 80, is the longest serving member of the Senate. He was first elected in 1974.

Let's hope it isn't anything serious, but he IS 80 years old.

Edit/Follow up: Dick Durban spoke to Leahy's wife, he's expected to be back in the Senate tomorrow.

If he is incapacited and has to resign or worse, the republican governor of Vermont gets to name another one and if its a republican we lose the majority again.

The Gov does not appoint a replacement in Vermont.

Leahy was just re-elected in 2020. There would probably be a Primary, then the Special. Who knows how long that would take? And if Leahy passes, control of the Senate would shift, goddamit.

The governor shall call an election but he has six months to do so. Meanwhile he names a replacement which is what I wrote in a previous post.

I forget the procedure was about, but it was the first time I have seen Leahy "walking" only already seated.. I was immediately concerned when he started speaking, I felt his health was on the verge of failing him. I realized that the state of Vermont is governed by a Republican. I wondered if his replacement should Leahy's health fail, would be subject to a Governor appointed seat.

I see up thread, that Vermont Governors does not get to appoint the replacement, which is a relief. However I'm wondering why on earth a Democratic candidate for the seat had not been worked out in advance of this election which Leahy apparently ran and won on when he knows his health is not in good shape, and makes us all vulnerable.

I have the same concern with Diane Feinstein. Her refusal to retire while we still have a Democratic Governor who can appoint her replacement, doesn't do it for the sake of our Country.

I just don't get it.

Just pray Leahy pulls through this.

Newt Gingrich and other nefarious actors bankrolling. I remember the insane recall Grey Davis which brought California years and years of Republican Governors. I don't want to live through that again. And Feinstein should know better.

Yes thoughts and prayers for Leahy.

It's been years since I been there.. My first actual residence was in San Clemente when Nixon was in office but that was an accidental set of events. i felt like Dana Point and Laguna Beach , San Juan Capistrano sort of "liberal" but you know.. still way too conservative for my comfort. I've been living in the North Bay for decades. We have our share of Nativists types but their voting record is low percentage.. fortunately. Our Covid is not as bad as other areas.

Shit man, I'm listening to Rachel's report while typing. Some crackpot from Alameda threatening Congressman Jeffries's family and his life threatened. holy crap.

He could have another 20+ years yet. Hopefully, not all in the Senate. Just like Feinstein. But we need him now, that's for sure. The rethugs not wearing masks are probably trying to intentionally kill dems, so we don't have the majority. They are that deranged. Scary, but not out of the realm of reality this day and age. I hope the dems are getting the same medical treatment Dumpy boy got. He was apparently sicker than we were led to believe.

Leaving us in a lurch when they pass their "use by" date. Their arrogance and belief that "only they" can do the job is killing us. Look at Feinstein, and now Leahy. 'Senator Emeritus' has to be a real thing... not "Senator until I die".
