Trump and McCarthy Meet and Agree on GOP Goal to Take House
Source: Bloomberg
(Bloomberg) -- Donald Trump, in a meeting with House Republican Leader Kevin McCarthy on Thursday, agreed to help the GOP retake control of the House in 2022.
McCarthy went to Trumps Mar-a-Lago resort in South Florida where the two men discussed many topics, starting with how Republicans can win the seven seats needed in next years midterm elections to retake the House, according to an account of the meeting provided by the Save America PAC.
President Trumps popularity has never been stronger than it is today, and his endorsement means more than perhaps any endorsement at any time, Save America said in a statement, calling the meeting a very good and cordial one.
A Jan. 15 Pew Research poll showed only a 29% job approval for Trump, the lowest of his presidency, as he was about to leave office.

(32,778 posts)We will have to work to keep the house. I think the Dems are woke and are fearful of losing the house, so I think momentum will still be with the Dems. The shell shock isnt going away anytime soon.

(24,507 posts)I checked my ActBlue donations for 2020......probably a 300% increase over what I used to spend on political donations, on the past 20 year average. I thought I could take 2021 off, in advance of the next cycle, but damn, I want to maintain some serious fundraising this year. I hope EarlG and Omaha Steve get together and think about good Democratic institutions to support and add to the Home Page.
The good news is I think the Republican Party will continue to hemorrhage voters from the saner components of their Party. Probably(I) voting (D). In 2 years, lots of new voters added (D). Meanwhile, what's left of the GOP gets to have primaries in 2022....should scare the shit out of sane Americans even more.

(10,024 posts)Thats why the filibuster has to go so McConnell cant prevent passage of House bills in the Senate. Even with that said, it may be an uphill battle because Republican states will gerrymander their districts to ensure more Republican wins. Im expecting Texas to gain another House seat or possibly two will our population growth, and those new seats will be fixed as Republican seats by making the big city districts larger and the rural, Republican districts smaller.
Democrats will file lawsuits, but they probably would not be settled in time for the 2022 election. It was just a year or two ago that a court case on redistricting from the 2010 census was settled.
I dont know if they have the authority, but I would like to see Congress pass a law that ensures fair redistricting by independent agents rather than partisan legislatures. They should also set requirements for paper backups for all electronic voting machines and limit the restrictions states use to suppress voters.

(15,286 posts)when Trump himself is on the ballot. Trumpism itself doesn't appeal to a significant majority of Americans. You can see that by how candidates who run on it consistently lose. The latest example being the two senate seats in GA. Despite both Perdue and Loeffler aligning themselves with Trump and his endorsement, turnout was lower in GOP strongholds while nearly the same as Nove turnout in Dem areas.

So those low ratings may not reflect the impact of his endorsement on those races.
From The 'Shared Psychosis' of Donald Trump and His Loyalists - Scientific American
"One such person is Bandy X. Lee, a forensic psychiatrist at the Yale School of Medicine for the past 17 years and president of the World Mental Health Coalition. Lee led a group of psychiatrists, psychologists and other specialists who questioned Trumps mental fitness for office in a book that she edited called The Dangerous Case of Donald Trump: 27 Psychiatrists and Mental Health Experts Assess a President. In doing so, Lee and her colleagues strongly rejected the American Psychiatric Associations modification of a 1970s-era guideline, known as the Goldwater rule, that discouraged psychiatrists from giving a professional opinion about public figures who they have not examined in person. Whenever the Goldwater rule is mentioned, we should refer back to the Declaration of Geneva, which mandates that physicians speak up against destructive governments, Lee says. This declaration was created in response to the experience of Nazism.
[snip]
Scientific American asked Lee to comment on the psychology behind Trumps destructive behavior, what drives some of his followersand how to free people from his grip when this damaging presidency ends.
[An edited transcript of the interview follows.]
What attracts people to Trump? What is their animus or driving force?
The reasons are multiple and varied, but in my recent public-service book, Profile of a Nation, I have outlined two major emotional drives: narcissistic symbiosis and shared psychosis. Narcissistic symbiosis refers to the developmental wounds that make the leader-follower relationship magnetically attractive. The leader, hungry for adulation to compensate for an inner lack of self-worth, projects grandiose omnipotencewhile the followers, rendered needy by societal stress or developmental injury, yearn for a parental figure. When such wounded individuals are given positions of power, they arouse similar pathology in the population that creates a lock and key relationship.
Shared psychosiswhich is also called folie à millions [madness for millions] when occurring at the national level or induced delusionsrefers to the infectiousness of severe symptoms that goes beyond ordinary group psychology. When a highly symptomatic individual is placed in an influential position, the persons symptoms can spread through the population through emotional bonds, heightening existing pathologies and inducing delusions, paranoia and propensity for violenceeven in previously healthy individuals. The treatment is removal of exposure."

Trump and McCarthy are scum, but really, every political party is trying to gain and consolidate power. This is the nature of democratic politics in a party based system.
