American Airlines will issue 13,000 new furlough notices to its employees on Friday with travel demand stagnating and government aid set to expire at the end of March.
After warning workers last week about the possibility of more furlough notices, Fort Worth-based American told employees in a letter Wednesday that itll issue the Worker Adjustment and Retraining Notices at the end of the week. The notices are legally required 60 days before any company makes major workforce reductions.
As we closed out last year with the successful extension of the Payroll Support Program, we fully believed that we would be looking at a summer schedule where wed fly all of our airplanes and need the full strength of our team, said the letter from CEO Doug Parker and President Robert Isom. Regrettably, that is no longer the case.
The warnings dont mean furloughs are certain, but are intended to alert employees who could temporarily lose their jobs. The airlines union employees have recall rights, but it could be several months until demand is significant enough to justify bringing workers back.
