NEW YORK (AP) Financier Jeffrey Epstein's ex-girlfriend claims she is being prosecuted on sex abuse charges that could put her in prison for life because Epstein killed himself and prosecutors wanted a substitute to replace him with, lawyers said in newly unsealed court papers.
Ghislaine Maxwell's lawyers challenged the case brought against their client last July on multiple grounds in papers filed last week and unsealed on Thursday with some redactions.
One does not need to engage in complex analysis to understand what has happened here: the government has sought to substitute our client for Jeffrey Epstein, even if it means stretching and ultimately exceeding the bounds of the law, the lawyers wrote in the Manhattan federal court documents.
The governments sudden zeal to prosecute Ms. Maxwell for alleged conduct with Epstein in the 1990s conduct for which the government never even charged Epstein follows a history that is both highly unusual and deeply troubling," they added.

(9,966 posts)... that's true. I also think he shouldn't have done the things that got him arrested.

(101,361 posts)so your 1st 2 ideas wouldn't have worked.
The one other grammatically possible interpretation was "his death caused his arrest", but you correctly didn't mention that because everyone knows that you don't get arrested after your own death.

(7,919 posts)the ones who ran the ovens, or shot prisoners, or took their possessions, or any of the direct contact with prisoners. Their crime was that they kept score and enabled all of the terrible things which happened there, and knew every detail of the plans and who it was these terrible things were done to, and made it possible to do it ever so efficiently. Only doing their job they would say. Only following orders...to enable something horrible.
Yes she has a case that they are now pursuing charges against her they had planned to apply further to Epstein. But you do have to ask how is it that she was there too, in so many situations so well recorded in those photographs, so ubiquitously part of his scene and mentioned by so many of his victims and his many wealthy "friends".
One is also moved to ask that when they are done with her and begin to work on his wealthy friends, some of whom it seems shared in his tastes and his "scene", will they make the same complaint? How about that Donald?

Weren't the authorities looking for Maxwell BEFORE Epstein died. If she'd turned herself in then, she could have made a deal and given them valuable information. Now she's the last procurer standing and must take the rap.

(7,919 posts)the fund set up to pay victims has ceased to payout claiming a financial shortfall.
Ever since Epstein became exposed and then incarcerated it has become clear that he was the center of a web of abuse and extortion. It has also become clear that there were others beyond Maxwell involved in it. None of them has been prosecuted, notably Trump. Much has been rumored about who among the rich, the powerful, and the famous owed Epstein favors or protection, or may have been part of the exploitation. When I hear of new complaints by Maxwell I get the feeling they are directed to those yet unindicted co-conspirators for relief or favors owed.
My thinking runs that there is a large network which fed Epstein and serviced his secrets along with his finances. It is likely that much of it still operates to the benefit of those who haven't been caught yet, and who may have access to some portion of his remaining finances.

I would not be at all shocked if there was a large, Republican-supported pedophile and human trafficking ring that used Epstein to acquire victims among other means. Ever Republican claim about others is a projection of what they do, in my experience, though they might exaggerate as they embellish their projections.

(3,630 posts)The case they were building was that Maxwell procured girls for Epstein and participated enthusiastically in Epstein's sexual encounters with them. They arrested Epstein first because he was the primary target and they had enough evidence up front, but once they got around to building the detailed case they would have come for Maxwell too.
