Amanda Gorman, in a first, brings poetry to Super Bowl

Source: AP

By JAKE COYLE

NEW YORK (AP) — Amanda Gorman, the 22-year-old poet who stirred America at the inauguration of President Joe Biden last month, again commanded the spotlight on one of the country’s biggest stages, the Super Bowl.

Gorman read an original poem Sunday during the pregame festivities in Tampa, Florida. The poem, titled “Chorus of the Captains,” was a tribute to three people for their contributions during the pandemic: educator Trimaine Davis, nurse manager Suzie Dorner and Marine veteran James Martin.

Gorman didn’t perform on the field but appeared in a taped video message that combined Gorman’s reading with images of Davis, Dorner and Martin. Recited Gorman:

“Let us walk with these warriors,

Charge on with these champions,

And carry forth the call of our captains.

We celebrate them by acting,

With courage and compassion,

By doing what is right and just.

For while we honor them today,

It is they who every day honor us.”

She is an excellent example to us all how The United States of America CAN be. Let us all work hard to end ANY social injustice to ANY group of people (Drumph enablers/supporters excluded. They lost that chance by embracing all his vile suppositions long ago)

I just don't see the need to shoehorn a poetry recital into a football game.

(This isn't just arts-specific hate against poetry. I could also do without the halftime musical act...especially this years'.)

its a spectacle. There are folks who only watch for the commercials and/or halftime show. Why not poetry? What better forum to promote art and literacy?

The Weeknd? Seriously? Bloody awful - the sound mixing was atrocious; and the dudes in red jackets wearing white masks - wassup with that? They all looked like they were wearing panties over their heads!
