Trump's historic 2nd trial opens with jarring video of siege

WASHINGTON (AP) — Democrats opened Donald Trump’s historic second impeachment trial Tuesday by showing the former president whipping up a rally crowd to march to the Capitol and “fight like hell” against his reelection defeat, followed by graphic video of the deadly attack on Congress that came soon after.

The lead House prosecutor told senators the case would present “cold, hard facts” against Trump, who is charged with inciting the mob siege of the Capitol to overturn the election he lost to Democrat Joe Biden. Senators sitting as jurors, many who themselves fled for safety that day, watched the jarring video of Trump supporters battling past police to storm the halls, Trump flags waving.

“That’s a high crime and misdemeanor,” said Rep. Jamie Raskin, D-Md., in opening remarks. “If that’s not an impeachable offense, then there’s no such thing.”

Trump is the first president to face impeachment charges after leaving office and the first to be twice impeached . The Capitol siege stunned the world as hundreds of rioters ransacked the building to try to stop the certification of Biden’s victory, a domestic attack on the nation’s seat of government unlike any in its history. Five people died.

The root of it came from the GOP not convicting him the last time. Everyone knew Trump would only get worse with his new empowerment. Even Susan Collins was concerned (4,785th day in a row).

Since then, 460,000 Americans have died from COVID. Several more incidents of unprovoked police murders were carried out. Acting president Mike Pence seems unlikely to have the same temper tantrums (or a pulse) as Trump. And Pence also wouldn't have the same cult following or had riled up the motley morons to rush the Capitol.

Pence also wouldn't be barking like a seal on crack about rigged elections or fake news.

Half of this is on Mitch & Co's hands that they sat on last year. That doesn't include members of Congress who spoke at Hoodstock or led KKK tours through the Capitol earlier that week.

or were they fidgeting, looking at their phones, reading papers, etc?

I couldn't watch much of the Dem's presentation.

Ha! Just heard on MSNBC that they were not really paying attention.

Minds are made up so the evidence matters little. The fact that Trump's lawyers gave little to Republican Senators to hang their hat on and give cover for a no vote they will just use what they have been using = the Constitutional excuse. My guess on the final tally will be 58 yes and 42 no so Trump will be acquitted.
