'The Mandalorian' Star Gina Carano Fired Amid Social Media Controversy

UTA has also dropped the actor, who will no longer be part of the 'Star Wars' galaxy.
Gina Carano will not be returning to The Mandalorian or the Star Wars galaxy after sharing a post on social media implying that being a Republican today is like being Jewish during the Holocaust.
"Gina Carano is not currently employed by Lucasfilm and there are no plans for her to be in the future," a Lucasfilm spokesperson said in a statement. "Nevertheless, her social media posts denigrating people based on their cultural and religious identities are abhorrent and unacceptable."
Carano has also been dropped as a client by UTA, an agency spokesperson confirms.
On Wednesday, the hashtag #FireGinaCarano was trending following an Instagram post from the outspoken conservative actor and former mixed martial artist that was met with severe backlash. The post has since been deleted, but screenshots were widely shared by users on social media who called for her firing from the hit Disney+ Star Wars show.

She seemed overweight and out of shape in the second series. But it's all acting in the end. She was ok, but not a character I will miss.
In real life, she seems to be a shit heel and would have liked to have been in the real ss.

Given the pace of their acquisitions over the last several years, I suppose it's possible eventually. We did already have President Goofy, though.

(3,193 posts)They're certainly entitled to believe and say whatever they like, as long as they don't run afoul of First Amendment restrictions about inciting violence. Alas, nowhere does the First Amendment state "and there will never be consequences for your speech." The marketplace of ideas will determine the value of opinions, and it will find some lacking. This is the way.

It's Lucasfilm's right to do whatever they want (w/i legal limits) with their cast. And the woman sounds like a jackass with a repugnant political vision.
But so what? Is she affecting hiring decisions or deciding who goes to jail?
I personally couldn't care less if the person that serves me a hamburger is a neo nazi in private life. I don't get why it should matter, or why that's a "me" problem.
I haven't seen the Mandalorian (only because TV time is limited) & I don't know whether she's great or terrible at whatever role she has. For me that would be the decision point.
I suppose, given the behavior demonstrated, there's probably more to the story.
barbtries
(28,799 posts)and it is harmful to the civilization we're trying to have.
Blasphemer
(3,261 posts)First, the legal one. As you say, there is nothing illegal in firing someone for this reason. She's not protected by anti-discrimination laws or the Constitution for her ideological views. Second, there is the business interest question. Carano is anti-mask (and I wouldn't be surprised if that also means anti-vaxx), and is against the use of trans-friendly gender pronouns. Those things could certainly directly impact LucasFilm's business in terms of creating safe sets and being able to hire other actors (who may not want to work with someone not respecting their pronoun choices). Then, there are indirect impacts on one's business - reputational effects in terms of who wants to work with LucasFilm, advertise their products, etc. In addition to the Nazi comment, Carano has stated that she does not believe that systemic racism exists. I can imagine this being very problematic for LucasFilm's business.
The third level is the trickier issue - the moral question. If we could set aside legal and business interest concerns, is there something morally wrong or wrong relative to our value systems in choosing not to associate with someone (whether through business or otherwise) based on their ideological views? And, does it matter what those ideological views are? An acontextual or neutral answer to the first question seems easy - either we think it is morally justifiable to limit our associations or we don't. This would mean it's okay to choose to associate with only white supremacists and it's equally okay to avoid associating with them. A contextual moral position would say that it depends on what those ideologies are. So, it might be okay to, for example, decide not to associate with people who engage in a kink/BDSM lifestyle that is at odds with your moral beliefs but it might not be okay to choose not to associate with individuals based on race or religion because of the history that defines that choice.
Personally, I look at the Carano situation as a contextual moral one. When I look at history, views such as those she possesses are not just dangerous to certain groups of people, they undermine U.S. democracy - the promise of which has never been fulfilled because of views like this.

(53 posts)I personally couldn't care less if the person that serves me a hamburger is a neo nazi in private life. I don't get why it should matter, or why that's a "me" problem.
Except she isn't keeping her views private, she's got a megaphone to spout offensive, harmful and hateful views (not just to Lucasfilm, but to us, the general public). And she earned that megaphone thanks to Lucasfilm giving her a chance on a hit show despite her politics. She will now fade into obscurity, which is exactly what she deserves.
The correct analogy would be if the person that serves you the hamburger went and got a neo-nazi tattoo on his face *after* he got hired and then started arguing and discriminating against customers. Would you, as the owner of the business or as a patron, still want that person around?
I haven't seen the Mandalorian (only because TV time is limited) & I don't know whether she's great or terrible at whatever role she has. For me that would be the decision point.
The fact is that she's hurting Disney/Lucasfilm's image and costing them money. She's also offended fans of the franchise. She could be the greatest actress in the world (as a Mandalorian fan, I assure you she is not, although her character is an interesting one), but if her harmful and discriminatory views are ignored, it would be akin to mainstreaming them. And the mainstreaming of conspiracy theories, harmful misinformation, hateful views, is why we are where we at the moment.
I mean Donald Trump was a great TV personality despite his controversial views, so I guess it was only fair that he got his own show and then used the profiled earned to launch his political career, as well as mainstreaming his harmful views which is now the official policy platform of a major political party, putting democracy at risk. By your argument, NBC did the right thing and should probably hire him back now that he's free again?

It's part of one's humanity, and being so jaded as to not feel them is no way to go through life. Not just from a slightly vague, morally conceptual way, but that it would also dull one's sense of wonder at the great things that come along.
