Sen. Whitehouse: Senate Ethics Committee to Investigate Coordination Between Trump and GOP Senators During Capitol Insurrection

As Democratic House Managers present a raft of compelling evidence to convict former President Donald Trump of inciting the deadly capitol insurrection of Jan. 6, another question looms over the Senate chamber: Were Republican Senators who amplified the lie of a “stolen election” and objecting to the Electoral College certification in any way complicit?

Senator Sheldon Whitehouse (D-RI) revealed on Last Word with Lawrence O’Donnell Wednesday evening that some members of the U.S. Senate were looking to answer that question in a manner that could raise a stink that could cover Republican Senators Josh Hawley (MO) and Ted Cruz (TX), both of whom were vocal proponents of objecting to the free and fair election results that led to President Joe Biden taking office.

Host Lawrence O’Donnell noted that it “seems Donald Trump was educating his crowds about who was on their side and who wasn’t,” adding that Ted Cruz played an active role campaigning in Georgia and trying to delay the Electoral College certification.

“Did you have a feeling that there were some Republican members of the Senate, highly recognizable like Senator Cruz, possibly Senator Hawley .. who are sitting there in the senate, never having felt threatened by this crowd at all, at any moment, because they knew, that that crowd knew, that they were on their side?” O’Donnell asked.

with his calling up the GA SOS and suggesting he manipulate votes, alleging issues with signature matching. Ethics complaints were filed with the Senate Ethics Committee against Graham for this last November BEFORE the Committee changed hands to Democratic member Chairs so those complaints need to be revived and/or delved into. And that is in addition to complaints filed with the GA Election board against Graham this past December for the same issue.

I suspect the Founders would be proud. Speaker Pelosi timed it, and the prep has been scintillating. Impeachment trial #2 as well as #1 separates patriot from scoundrel, public good from private interest. This is a defining moment no matter how hard Republicans try to make it about something else, ignore it, deny or seek escape. The defenders of Donald J. Trump will end up supporting insurrection and will be forever tainted. I'm hopeful few will be re-elected. There will be that matter of voting to support the overthrow of the U.S. government to be explained, and if Democrats can't make hay on that one we really are incompetent and screwed.

Moments after the proceedings in the Senate were halted by the Capitol Police, my phone rang. The caller ID indicated that the call was coming from the White House. I thought it was Robert O’Brien, the president’s national security advisor, calling to update me on a question I had asked him about a security threat from Iran.

To my great surprise, it was not Robert O’Brien, but President Trump on the other end of the line. My heart started to beat a little faster, as I was convinced he could only be calling to argue with me about my reading of the Twelfth Amendment and Article II, Section 1.
