Sen. Whitehouse: Senate Ethics Committee to Investigate Coordination Between Trump and GOP Senators During Capitol Insurrection
By Colby Hall Feb 11th, 2021, 8:04 am
As Democratic House Managers present a raft of compelling evidence to convict former President Donald Trump of inciting the deadly capitol insurrection of Jan. 6, another question looms over the Senate chamber: Were Republican Senators who amplified the lie of a stolen election and objecting to the Electoral College certification in any way complicit?
Senator Sheldon Whitehouse (D-RI) revealed on Last Word with Lawrence ODonnell Wednesday evening that some members of the U.S. Senate were looking to answer that question in a manner that could raise a stink that could cover Republican Senators Josh Hawley (MO) and Ted Cruz (TX), both of whom were vocal proponents of objecting to the free and fair election results that led to President Joe Biden taking office.
Host Lawrence ODonnell noted that it seems Donald Trump was educating his crowds about who was on their side and who wasnt, adding that Ted Cruz played an active role campaigning in Georgia and trying to delay the Electoral College certification.
Did you have a feeling that there were some Republican members of the Senate, highly recognizable like Senator Cruz, possibly Senator Hawley .. who are sitting there in the senate, never having felt threatened by this crowd at all, at any moment, because they knew, that that crowd knew, that they were on their side? ODonnell asked.

(11,564 posts)The best they can now hope for is that a "Not Guilty" will be big step towards all this just going away, and their reputations aren't damaged irreparably. Given the cranial density of their constituents, that is, sadly, a real possibility.

(51,284 posts)Here is what he wrote to me on November 11, after I requested that he accept the results of the election and say that Biden had won it:
Thank you for taking time to share your thoughts on the integrity of our presidential election.
President Trump did a great job with unbelievable energy and dedication at the end of the campaign. We have set all-time records for voter participation. Every vote that was legally cast needs to be counted. Votes that were not legally cast should not be counted. As a former Secretary of State and a voter, I know it is essential that our election systems be protected to preserve the integrity of the voting process. Candidates have the right to use all of the tools available to them to ensure the votes are accurately counted. This process should be completely transparent so the American people are confident in the results. America will once again serve as an example to the world.

And this is what he emailed when I asked him to pay attention:
Thank you for taking time to share your thoughts on the impeachment of President Trump.
As you know, on January 13, 2021, the House of Representatives approved an article of impeachment against President Trump for high crimes and misdemeanors. I will consider all the information presented and be sure to keep your thoughts in mind as the article of impeachment proceeds before the full Senate for consideration.

(13,523 posts)were a juror and were paying no attention to the proceedings, (lets say doodling on paper, working on other things with your feet propped on a desk next to you, reading things unrelated to the trial) would you not be given a warning, then kicked off the jury if you continued on with these same actions?

(129,085 posts)with his calling up the GA SOS and suggesting he manipulate votes, alleging issues with signature matching. Ethics complaints were filed with the Senate Ethics Committee against Graham for this last November BEFORE the Committee changed hands to Democratic member Chairs so those complaints need to be revived and/or delved into. And that is in addition to complaints filed with the GA Election board against Graham this past December for the same issue.

(43,177 posts)I suspect the Founders would be proud. Speaker Pelosi timed it, and the prep has been scintillating. Impeachment trial #2 as well as #1 separates patriot from scoundrel, public good from private interest. This is a defining moment no matter how hard Republicans try to make it about something else, ignore it, deny or seek escape. The defenders of Donald J. Trump will end up supporting insurrection and will be forever tainted. I'm hopeful few will be re-elected. There will be that matter of voting to support the overthrow of the U.S. government to be explained, and if Democrats can't make hay on that one we really are incompetent and screwed.

(1,634 posts)Here, unedited, is what Lee told Bryan Schott of The Salt Lake Tribune via text message that evening.
Moments after the proceedings in the Senate were halted by the Capitol Police, my phone rang. The caller ID indicated that the call was coming from the White House. I thought it was Robert OBrien, the presidents national security advisor, calling to update me on a question I had asked him about a security threat from Iran.
To my great surprise, it was not Robert OBrien, but President Trump on the other end of the line. My heart started to beat a little faster, as I was convinced he could only be calling to argue with me about my reading of the Twelfth Amendment and Article II, Section 1.
