Congress to establish independent commission to examine Capitol riot, Pelosi says

Source: KTLA5

House Speaker Nancy Pelosi said Monday that Congress will establish an independent, Sept. 11-style commission to look into the deadly insurrection that took place at the U.S. Capitol.

Pelosi said the commission will “investigate and report on the facts and causes relating to the January 6, 2021, domestic terrorist attack upon the United States Capitol Complex … and relating to the interference with the peaceful transfer of power.”

In a letter to Democratic colleagues, Pelosi said the House will also put forth supplemental spending to boost security at the Capitol.

After former President Donald Trump’s acquittal at his second Senate impeachment trial, bipartisan support appeared to be growing for an independent commission to examine the deadly insurrection.

Nancy is not letting up on this. If we are ever to heal, we need answers.

Methinks some of trumps loyalists are shivering in their boots. For one, and there are others, the jury was stacked with co-conspirators. We shall see.

there isn’t anything more important to safeguarding the well-being of democracy in America. Democrats can accomplish enough good things that directly benefit all Americans at the same time this is being pursued that public opinion can and will remain on our side. We have great people representing us in Congress and a great President and VP. I’m 100 percent confident they are ready to get to work and are rolling up their sleeves and getting to work already. Good for them. Good for us. Good for America!

For the tiebreaker: a "non-politician" such as Caroline Kennedy or Cindy McCain

It would be a mistake to choose people who are already filling an elected position in the Senate or House of Representatives.

so I doubt he will have any involvement.

I expect they bring in people who were active in the intelligence community in the past like James Clapper (under Obama) and Dan Coats (under 45 who was summarily fired-by-tweet).

I also know that Pelosi had General Russel Honoré involved in doing a security assessment of the Capitol after it happened so he might also be involved.

They would make it far to easy for the Republicans to use them as a distraction from anything uncovered during the investigation.

We didn't want a Mueller report since we knew the DOJ would be involved and it wouldn't be non partisan. An independant, separate investigation which is fully funded and speedy is needed for the Jan 6 coup attempt as well as another one which holds him accountable for knowingly causing hundreds of thousands of deaths

and enabled. It would dig out the criminal conspiracy but then it would look at the media and its role in fomenting disinformation and anger.

It might move into a second phase focusing on the active attacks on groups of Americans, the smears and fear-mongering, the tearing down of the prerequisites for a healthy democracy: commitment to tolerance, pluralism, and to healthy and robust discussion in the media from those whose views diverge. Or it might be they would recommend another commission take up and consider the way media enabled this to happen and make recommendations to prevent that from occurring again.
