Justices to consider whether Arizonas voting rules discriminate against minorities
By Amy Howe on Feb 16, 2021 at 9:00 am
The 2020 elections may be over, but the Supreme Court will soon hear oral argument in a pair of voting-rights cases from one of last years key battleground states, and the eventual outcome may determine how courts will assess allegedly discriminatory voting rules for years to come.
The cases challenge two Arizona voting provisions: a policy that requires an entire ballot to be thrown out if the ballot was cast at the wrong precinct, and a state law that bans the collection of ballots by third parties, sometimes called ballot harvesting. The challengers argue that both the policy and the law discriminate against racial minorities in Arizona, and the justices eventual ruling obviously could affect how the state carries out its elections going forward. More broadly, though, the justices could also weigh in on the proper test for evaluating voting-rights claims like these, which could have a sweeping effect nationwide.
The cases, Brnovich v. Democratic National Committee and Arizona Republican Party v. Democratic National Committee, have been consolidated for one hour of argument. The court will hear the cases on March 2.

(16,041 posts)If it was wrong district, I could see throwing it out. But the wrong precinct still have the person voting for the candidates running.
Vote harvesting I like because I was able to collect my neighbors ballots and drop them off at the supervisor of elections office. I took 30 in and that saved them from going themselves (remember mail was a mess....plus pandemic). The person at the office looked at every outer envelope, they were all sealed by the voter. I did nothing but deliver them. Two forgot the dates and in from of a repug and democratic representative, I wrote the date. The workers took this seriously. No funny business and Ill say that the republican representative was just as thorough and actually pleasant. There is no way there is voter fraud. I suspect everywhere is the same.

(25,917 posts)finding the voting place for my precinct in several years now. We can vote at any location in the county. The needed ballot is printed up on the spot for the voter, so we all get exactly the one we need.
More states should be like that.
