Mitt Romney will oppose LGBTQ rights bill unless Christians get a right to discriminate
Source: LGBTQ Nation
Will out bisexual Senator Kyrsten Sinema help him kill the legislation? So far, the answer is yes.
By Bil Browning Wednesday, February 17, 2021
Sen. Mitt Romney (R-UT) has announced that he will oppose the Equality Act unless it includes language that would allow Christians to discriminate against LGBTQ people. The bill is a priority for the Biden administration and Romneys vote could be critical to passage.
While there is a path around Romneys roadblock, out bisexual Sen. Kyrsten Sinema (D-AZ) could sink the proposed legislation altogether.
Sen. Romney believes that strong religious liberty protections are essential to any legislation on this issue, and since those provisions are absent from this particular bill, he is not able to support it, said Arielle Mueller, a Romney spokesperson, told the Washington Blade.
While Democrats control both chambers of Congress and the bill will easily pass the House of Representatives, the vote in the Senate is a little more complicated. The House is expected to vote on the bill next week.

(957 posts)There are plenty of Christians (self-identifying ones, as opposed to followers of Christ) who don't like Mormons any more than LGBTQ, Blacks, Hispanics, Jews, Muslims, Asians, and just about anybody else. There are some that don't even like Catholics...

(14,174 posts)I grew up in an evangelical house. Everyone else was wrong and we were right. But humble about that fact (yeah right).
Jews, Catholics, and other evangelical churches too, like Baptists who allowed smoking!, or those crazy Pentecostals speaking in tongues. They didn't overtly put Mormons down, but once in awhile if the topic came up, they were sure to educate us how they were more like a cult, and not REAL Christians..........like us!

(3,395 posts)It should work both ways right? Ok, you discriminate against me, I can also discriminate against you.
Lets see, you are a Catholic? Well yes, I am a Christian but not a Catholic, so get out of my bank, we cannot give you the loan you so desperately need.
How about schools? Hmm, you are and Evangelist? Sorry, we only accept Baptists...
The battle of discrimination...that will unite the country!
I know its childish, what I wrote, but it is also childish from Romney to come up with stupidity like that, and they do it just to get points with their voters.

He needs to know a couple of things though: His beliefs won't make other orientations magically disappear. (and) Odds are that one of his five sons will remain in the closet and will never have an honest relationship with him.

(52,162 posts)since even if we pass that law, the Supreme Court will create a but Jesus exception to it. The case Fulton V Philadelphia was heard in Nov and from oral arguments it is quite clear they are going to carve out a massive exception to anti discrimination laws that protect LGBT people. This case Catholic charities who are paid by Phily to screen foster parents refuse to do so for LGBT parents, Phily said then we won't use you, the court will wind up saying Phily has to.

(14,174 posts)Nor what he wants it to include.
I get it, he wants a law to include the right to refuse service to anyone that shop owners hear God above telling them not to serve. Actually, its his own closed community of circle jerking bigots.
But I don't likle how he gets away with being against the rights of some Americans, and we are all just supposed to assume what he means. If he has the courage to block it from moral grounds, then at least articulate in detail why.

(16,189 posts)It's that simple. No one is telling them they have to be LGBTQ. They are not violating any tenet of their religion. They just want to keep others from having rights because they don't like it.

What's up with Senema?
It makes no sense for Mitt Romney to make such a stupid requirement for his support. Why bother passing it at all? "We are all equal but some of us are more equal than the rest."
Oh! He wants to claim when he runs for Pres that he voted for some equal rights bill. He thinks that gay people are stupid. And he wants to claim for his base that he saved them from the awful gay tide that was about to wash over them.
Get real, Mitt. This is asinine.

(10,572 posts)Im not 100% sure why, but sometimes people come out and are not supportive of the whole community or the communities basic civil rights. This happens a lot with former LDS LGBT persons. I have seen it time and time again. They come out, are still Republican and then gradually do a 180. A certain percentage never fully leave their belief system. While she has been out of the Church for 25 years she is also catering to the AZ population as a whole.
She came out in 2005 as bisexual. I dont know how involved she has been with the local community or if she has ever been in a relationship with a woman (one does not need to, however people that do tend to have their ideas changed and challenged on a more personal level).

(6,536 posts)It's Sinema.
I wonder why she joined the Democrats? I dunno. Nothing about her suggests that she is antigay rights. So, it's puzzling. This will backfire on her.
I was surprised to read that she has a Phd in Justice Studies. She is highly educated at least.
Plus, she voted to convict Trump both times.
I'm not a fan, but with a mixed review. I don't like it when anybody's human rights are constrained. Straight rights do not mean that gay rights should be diminished.
