Houston, Texas' Largest City, Says Unboiled Water Unsafe to Drink; 3 Million Without Power
Source: Newsweek
Houston, the nation's third-largest city, notified residents on Wednesday that water is unsafe to drink without boiling it first, while more than 3 million residents are without power because of extreme weather conditions.
According to a Houston Public Works press release, "Individuals without power to boil water are advised to use bottled water."
The release continued, "The public is advised to minimize water usage for health and safety and discontinue use of sprinklers, washing machines and other nonessential activities that require water usage."
The release also said that "water pressure dropped below the Texas Commission on Environmental Quality's (TCEQ) required minimum of 20 PSI during the arctic winter weather event starting on February 16, 2021, at noon."

(2,018 posts)Houston (especially the poor of Houston) always get hit hard. High density means lots of juicy zones to turn power off to, to keep ahead of poor production. But basically, EVERYWHERE has a boil water warning right now. Anywhere there were blackouts, pumps were affected. Anywhere pumps were affected, lines froze and cracked. When there's no water running in the pipes, and insufficient pressure once it restarts, you can't treat water. So, large or small, every town and every city in TX is pretty much advising people to boil their water.

(108 posts)We were out of power for 35 hours, so it is wonderful to have power again. A hot water pipe between our bedroom and bathroom burst so we have turned our water off. It will stay off until repair. We keep about a dozen gallons of water on hand for emergencies. We also have 2 cases and 4 gallons of drinking water. My husband and I are both in our 70's and try to be prepared. I worry about those still without power. We are using the heat (natural gas) but not turning it too high, keeping blinds closed and minimal lights. I look forward to getting back to normal. Maybe after we get our second Pfizer on the 25th we can breathe a sigh of relief.
