The country's top diplomat Wang Yi also addressed the hot topics of Xinjiang, Hong Kong and Myanmar that are on the agenda at the National People's Congress.
China's claim to Taiwan is an "insurmountable red line," the Chinese foreign minister warned the US administrationled by President Joe Biden on Sunday.

China on Taiwan
"The Chinese government has no room for compromise or concessions on the Taiwan issue," Wang said on Sunday.
"We urge the new US administration to fully understand the high sensitivity of the Taiwan issue" and "completely change the previous administration's dangerous practices of "crossing the line" and "playing with fire," he said.
Taiwan is an island democracy that split from the mainland in 1949. Beijing continues to claim it as its own territory.

(47,324 posts)over the disputed claims to islands in the South China Sea.
China is putting a red line around those islands, the South China Sea, the East China Sea
and the Yellow sea.
America's secret and open naval activity in the area may be sharply curtailed.
The US surveillance of North Korea and naval warship presence in the Yellow sea, is much too close to Shanghai, China's enormous financial center. They are not happy about that. China has been building up its military and nuclear capability. And it looks like they are willing to fight for all of their claims to territory.

(9,294 posts)The ROC's constitution includes a claim to be government of China.
For this reason no country recognizes ROC/Taiwan as an independent country. There can be only one government of China
China (the People's Republic of China) has made it clear, that if Taiwan votes to amend their constitution / declares independence, they will invade. That has been their position since taking China's seat at the UN, and is understood by all.

(12,587 posts)Semantics. Taiwan makes their own decisions. They have their own military. make their own trade deals. And so on. Why bother to "declare" independence when you're already living it? China is full of bluster over a declaration of something that already exists. Its a geopolitical absurdity. We have "The American Institute" in Taiwan instead of a US Embassy. But it does the exact same things an embassy does!

(5,504 posts)They make outlandish claims like Taiwan is part of mainland China then lose it and resort to threats when reality is pointed out to them.

(20,878 posts)My late father was stationed in China towards the end of WWII in what was Peking at the time (Bejing today).
He had plenty of tales to tell and he said two things that come to mind:
1. There are too many people.
2. The best thing that ever happened to China was communism. This is true as they were basically starving to death and bodies were collected in the morning, bodies that had either frozen to death and/or died of starvation. It was not a pretty picture.
How dare they.

I take it we're not allowed to call the ROC the Real Only China?
