Pfizer/BioNTech say COVID-19 vaccine likely to prevent asymptomatic infection

Source: Reuters

Pfizer Inc and BioNTech SE said on Wednesday that real-world data from Israel suggests that their COVID-19 vaccine is 94% effective in preventing asymptomatic infections, meaning the vaccine could significantly reduce transmission.

The companies also said the latest analysis of the Israeli data shows the vaccine was 97% effective in preventing symptomatic disease, severe disease and death. That is basically in line with the 95% efficacy Pfizer and BioNTech reported from the vaccine’s late-stage clinical trial in December.

The analysis also shows real-world evidence of the vaccine’s effectiveness against a highly infectious variant of COVID-19 first discovered in Britain, known as B.1.1.7. More than 80% of the tested specimens when the analysis was conucted were variant B.1.1.7.

There was only a limited number of infections in Israel caused by the so-called South African variant - known as B.1.351 - so they were not able to evaluate vaccine effectiveness against this variant.

So greatful that President Biden has gotten things rolling with the vaccine immunizations. This country would be in dire shape if the village idiot had been reelected.

they're the ones spreading the virus by refusing to wear masks or social distance. And several GOP governors have opened everything up too soon.

Couple weeks after that, I can relax. But I’ll still wear my mask in public places. I don’t want anybody thinking I’m GQP.

I get my 2nd Pfizer shot on the 25th, but will happily wear a mask for as long as necessary; it's a minor inconvenience at most. What matters is that I no longer feel like a piece of fabric on my face is my only defense against falling sick and dying (I'm in a high-risk category).

Got my 2nd Pfizer shot a week ago, had no side effects at all, and now this news, which eases my mind almost totally.

I will still mask up out in public but hopefully the day will come soon where we reach herd immunity and we can stop that.

They did not want to go through the hassle of scheduling a second shot and J & J was available. For all the concern about J & J being shunned, it will be interesting to see what people's preferences are and which vaccines will be in demand.

We're in FL, we signed up but no one can give any estimates about when vaccines will be available for under-60 folks like us.

It's almost like Ron DeathSentence doesn't have a plan.

right after DeSatan's rich pals and conspiracy theorists have had theirs. I'm so glad I fled the state of Florida. Back to the big blue of New York, although the winters are hellacious.

Good luck to you, and keep trying. Biden wants to get the vaccine to pharmacies all over, and if it's one thing Florida has in abundance, its pharmacies.

Fortunately, Biden is setting up mass vaccination centers that will get shots in people's arms, as well as vastly increasing supplies to CVS & Walgreens. Biden just set up a huge drive-thru site at Cal State Los Angeles staffed by the National Guard. That's where I got my Pfizer shot yesterday.

People who are vaccinated can be infected. The vaccine just jump starts the immune system so the infection is gone before they know they have it. People who are vaccinated can shed live virus in these cases, it's just unclear if they shed sufficient quantities of it to pose a danger to other people.

Vaccines keep you from getting sick if you're exposed to the target virus. Short term, until more people are vaccinated, it's best to wear that mask after you've been vaccinated on the off chance you pose a danger to unvaccinated people.

Vaccines.
I tried for my brother yesterday and 7 days available
And in blocks for all day
Came up for Safeway.
I was able to get him and his girlfriend scheduled
At the time and day i thought would work for him.
I was shocked!
Now they will have it in 5 days.
Keep trying!
