The largest asteroid to pass by Earth this year will approach within some 1.25 million miles (two million kilometers) of our planet on March 21, NASA said Thursday.
The US space agency said it will allow astronomers to get a rare close look at an asteroid.
The asteroid, 2001 FO32, is estimated to be about 3,000 feet in diameter and was discovered 20 years ago, NASA said.

(30,613 posts)It's possible they are tied to the Younger Dryas ice age recurrence, and the extinction of large land animals around the planet, 12,800 years ago. May also have wiped out Clovis Culture in North America.

(86,650 posts)Last week I saw, like at 4am, a strange, illuminated streak in the sky. It was as bright as a sundog only in the night sky. It was visible for several minutes, long enough for me to throw on some clothes and step outside to get a better look at it. I suspect it was some object falling to Earth or whizzing very closely past.
