Rand Paul Gets Schooled On Coronavirus Variants After Calling Fauci's Masks 'Theater'
Source: huff post
CORONAVIRUS 03/18/2021 06:17 pm ET
Masks are protective, Dr. Anthony Fauci said before informing the senator that COVID-19 can still pose threats to those already infected or vaccinated.
In a heated exchange in the Senate on Thursday, Sen. Rand Paul (R-Ky.) challenged Dr. Anthony Fauci on his understanding of whether people can get reinfected with COVID-19, telling the nations top infectious disease expert that wearing two masks is just theater.
Fauci was quick to give a lesson on the dangers of different coronavirus strains.
......................
Here we go again with the theater. Lets get down to the facts, Fauci said before breaking down the potential risks that mutated versions of the virus can have on all people ― including those who have already been vaccinated or infected with the original virus strain of SARS-CoV-2, which Fauci referred to as the wild type.
I agree with you that you very likely would have protection from wild type, for at least six months, if youre infected, Fauci said. But we, in our country, now have variants that are circulating.
When you talk about reinfection, and you dont key in the concept of variants, thats an entirely different ball game, thats a good reason for a mask, he added. He went on to cite a study out of South Africa that found people were becoming reinfected after being exposed to one of these new variants.
It was as if they had never been infected before, he explained. They had no protection.

Sen. @RandPaul
: "If we're not spreading the infection, isn't it just theater? You have the vaccine and you're wearing two masks, isn't that theater?

(70,306 posts)..............This isnt the first time Paul and Fauci have sparred at Senate hearings. Last May, Paul criticized Fauci for his recommendation that schools not open in the fall. Then, in September, he falsely suggested that New York City succeeded at flattening the curve in the early months of the pandemic not because of shutdowns and strict adherence to CDC guidelines, but because the initial devastating outbreak had allowed the population to reach herd immunity..............................

He doesn't have a bachelor's degree.
Paul holds a medical degree from Duke University, but he was a few courses shy of earning a bachelor's degree from Baylor University. The Kentucky senator was enrolled at the Texas Christian college, where he studied biology and English, from fall 1981 to summer 1984. He left the program after receiving his acceptance to medical school. At the time, Duke did not require a bachelor's degree for admittance, but the policy has since changed.
A fact-check conducted by The Washington Post revealed two instances on the same day in February where Paul stated that he held degrees in biology and English. A spokesman for the senator later argued to the paper that a medical degree is a biology degree.

(5,857 posts)in requiring an undergrad degree for medical school admission. In most places you do 6 years post secondary education to get an MBBS, then do 1-2 years of internships / research to get an MD. There are still US med schools schools that direct admit from HS and do 6 year programs, but only a few slots for them.
In the US though you have (effectively) 3 years of training post MD as a minimum. 1-3 legally depending on state, but 3 if you want a job. Paul completed a 4 year Ophthalmology residency.

(7,220 posts)Ol' weasel head really thought he was going to score some points, trying to use his medical background to put himself on par with a world leader in the field, and tell the guy on national television what a hack he thought he was.
It was clear by the time Fauci began to respond, Randall knew he'd overplayed his hand and was about to become a viral meme.

Dr. Fauci on @CuomoPrimeTime
on Rand Paul. Im afraid if people hear what he says and believe it, and they have an elderly person who has been infected and they decide, Well Paul says lets not wear a mask, they wont. They can get reinfected again and get into trouble.
