WASHINGTON - U.S. Postmaster General Louis DeJoy is set to release a 10-year strategic plan as early as Tuesday expected to propose slowing delivery standards for some first-class mail as he seeks to put the money-losing U.S. Postal Service (USPS) on firmer financial footing, two people briefed on the matter said.
"I would suggest that we are on a death spiral," DeJoy a U.S. House committee in February. At a separate March 11 congressional hearing, DeJoy signaled some changes, including acknowledging his plan would revise existing service standards.
The current delivery standards are "not achievable," DeJoy said. "We cannot go to California from New York in three days without going on planes and we don't own planes."
A USPS spokesman declined to comment on the timing of the plan's release.

(54,770 posts)nowadays -- mostly noncritical mail -- to go across country in 3 days for a lot less than a dollar.
Nor, can we continue to have the postal service crippled in making long-range plans because they have to beg Congress for a loan or grant every year, just to keep from threatening to shut down.
It's time for a long-range plan and Congressional action to modify the plan if necessary and figure out how to finance it -- options include increase postage substantially, cut some services, give the postal service a grant every year to cover whatever their budgetary shortfall is, discontinue requiring post office to account for accrued benefits just like almost every other organization in America, etc.

(816 posts)This prick needs to go. Yes, they're on a death spiral because of legislation enacted by scumbag republicans. Their "strategic plan" has been to privatize the USPS. Good union jobs. That's the reason. Don't be fooled by these assholes.

Put the frigging fast sorting machines that a-hole put in a warehouse somewhere back on line and watch deficits disappear, mail get delivered on time and service satisfaction rise again.

(7,921 posts)carry mail anywhere. The GOP has been on a 50 year agenda to defund and eliminate publicly owned mail delivery. Louis DeJoy represents the final solution.
In Canada, England, France, Germany, and elsewhere the internet is owned and run by the Post Office as a public utility with much higher data rates as standard in any household or business.

However, if you read the article there are serious financial losses faced by the postal service and there have been for a long time.
Something needs to be done, but I would like to see what more imaginative people than DeJoy have to say about it. This national delivery system, which covers rural areas, is quite valuable. It just needs to be brought into line with current needs.
