Biden To Unveil Multitrillion-Dollar Infrastructure Plan in Pittsburgh Next Week

Source: Reuters

U.S. President Joe Biden next week will travel to Pittsburgh, where he kicked off his presidential campaign in 2019, to unveil a multitrillion-dollar plan to rebuild America’s infrastructure, choosing a backdrop of an American city with a long union history.

Biden is expected to push for a “Build Back Better” plan that could have a price tag as high as $4 trillion to pay for traditional roads and bridges while also tackling climate change and domestic policy issues like income equality.

Biden is expected to travel to the Western Pennsylvania city on March 31, the White House said on Wednesday. Pittsburgh is a blue-collar city that is home to the United Steel Workers union, long a Biden ally.

The legislative effort is expected to be split into two parts, an initial package the deals with traditional transportation projects and a second one that addresses domestic priorities, such as universal prekindergarten, national childcare and free community college tuition.

they're going to kill the filibuster by somehow offering Manchin big pieces of bacon to take home to W. Va that he can't refuse.

Then it'll be on like Donkey Kong.

It was surprising to hear him tout a huge infrastructure bill after all this talk of needing gop support for any bill passed knowing that the gop will obviously not go for a huge bill... I hope you are right.

I think Pittsburgh has more bridges than Venice, Italy. There are bridges everywhere. In varying condition.

Investments in productivity, jobs. Reinvigorate the economy. Republicans will be fine with it 5 years out - profits, stocks up, workers consuming. Joe Biden has an outstanding sense of political timing. I am more impressed every day.

I remember then VP Biden speaking at the 2009 Labor Day Parade here in Pittsburgh.

We always marched with the Iron Workers back then, and we took one of our teenage German host-daughters that year; we were up front 20 yards from the stage - it was a great experience for her and us.

We have a picture of her with Joe on the stage in the background speaking - she now brags that she 'knows' The President of The United States personally.

I plan to be there if it's an outdoor speech, otherwise I'll certainly see it on TV.

The thing is I'm getting my 2nd dose of Pfizer on March 30, so I hope I'll be up for it.

No one will argue America's infrastructure needs help. I'll point out that a lot of highway funding is going to be funneled into Republican areas (rural highways and "economic development" projects i.e. roads to nowhere) that will do little to alleviate congestion or outdated road systems in the suburban and urban areas where most folks live. Examples like the Robert Byrd highway and the Bud Carson highway are prime examples of unneeded roadways put in by well connect politicians.

This money should be targeted for areas that truly need it. Not to build rural interstates or paid to states that have overdeveloped highway systems that they can't maintain with their own tax base. We need to force states to put up money to get a match. Local folks who are willing to pay for their own infrastructure need to be recognized and rewarded. Otherwise, most of this money will be swallowed as "political favors" (sorry WV) or sent to folks who've let their road systems go to pot because they hate taxes.

Dangling money in front of Republicans is not going to get them to cooperate. The bill should be structures so that if a rep or senator votes against it, their district or state gets a reduced amount of money. There should be consequences for being a stick in the mud.
