California voters would support Newsom against recall campaign, new poll finds
Source: Politico
A double-digit majority of likely voters said they would vote to retain Newsom, with 56 percent saying they would keep him versus 40 percent seeking to jettison the Democratic governor, according to a Public Policy Institute of California poll released Tuesday night.
The favorable poll bolsters Newsoms argument that a recall fueled by pandemic fatigue will fall flat in Democrat-heavy California. While the effort to oust him hasn't yet formally qualified for the ballot, it is overwhelmingly likely to go before voters in the fall. Newsom has launched a campaign in his defense and begun enlisting national Democratic luminaries, including Sen. Bernie Sanders, Sen. Elizabeth Warren and voting rights advocate Stacey Abrams.
Overall, Newsom has a 53 percent approval rating, down from his peak of 65 percent in May 2020. That includes 77 percent approval among Democrats and a slight edge among no-party-preference voters, a growing constituency that makes up a quarter of voters and approves of Newsom 49 percent to 46 percent.

(6,803 posts)We know the creeps, libertarians, and right-wing fools behind this. If possible, no more Newsom is Toast from the negative doomsayers among us. It is becoming tiresome and boring.

(92,381 posts)and trumpers, many from out of state, who pushed this garbage, that will cost the state 70 million dollars at a time we can't afford this bullshit.
As long as we have the turnout, the recall will go down in flames

(80 posts)And I will never vote to oust him. Have you noticed that the strongest Democratic Governors are being attacked? I believe the GOP are behind both attacks on Newsom and Cuomo. They can't win in Calif or NY except by cheating or casting lies about them. I can't wait to vote NO on recalling Gov Newsome.

This time last year I was watching Gov Cuomo trying to inform New Yorkers about the pandemic, while incidentally engaging the whole nation with his emotional capacity, genuine ethnic folksiness, intelligence, and heart. He talked about his family in very relatable ways.
This time last year I was tuning in to my own Governor Newsoms broadcasts as he tried to keep us abreast of Californias efforts to deal with the catastrophe. Hes really bright, and I like that, and hes a Democrat so we know where he stands on the important issues, but hes a technocrat, so while not cold, he lacks the folksiness of the guy from New York.
Over time, hubs and I started assessing the two men as presidential candidates, post-pandemic. I bet a lot of other people were doing the same.
What do you think their prospects are now?

(8,923 posts)What is the reason behind the recall? Other than (R)'s not getting their way.
I live in SD, and I still can't find a reason why Gov. Newsom is being Recalled.

(90,787 posts)...any way they can. Clearly, not everyone voted for Newsom when he was elected in the first place, but he won fair and square.
It didnt take Trump to show Republicans they didnt have to take no for an answer, as they had already done it by ousting Gray Davis, and with a recall ballot stuffed with known and unknown wannabes, we ended up with Arnold Schwartzenegger.

(8,923 posts)He campaigned and never once mentioned that the state would be
20 billion in the red until after he won (because of the dot com crash).
Then after he was elected Davis announced it, and people were pi$$ed.
Once the Recall was announced, ENRON dumped a bunch of money
backing Herr Gropenator, so that CA. could stop their lawsuit against Enron
over Enron's intentional brown-outs we were experiencing across the state.
I was not happy with Davis not announcing the tax shortfall prior to the election,
but I still did not vote to RECALL him.
I was pi$$ed that Herr Gropenator took office then really pi$$ed me off when
he settled with Enron for 3 cents on the dollar.

(14,176 posts)Of course Democrats want a pure as driven snow, every Democratic candidate. No past mistakes, going back decades even. No prejudices when you were a young, growing, and learning person.
But right now, we must accept and defend even a flawed Democrat. Of course there are limits. But our purity test has to be somewhat relaxed in this age where the other side, for one, is worse, and two doesn't give a shit about the issue other than to push over the first domino and watch as we crawl all over ourselves to be the first to demand resignation!
