In New Book, Boehner Says He Regrets Clinton Impeachment

Source: New York Times

WASHINGTON — Former Speaker John Boehner, Republican of Ohio, says in a new memoir that he regrets supporting the impeachment of President Bill Clinton, calling it a partisan attack that he now wishes he had repudiated.

In his book “On the House: A Washington Memoir,” a copy of which was obtained by The New York Times, Mr. Boehner blames Representative Tom DeLay of Texas, then the No. 2 Republican, for leading a politically motivated campaign against Mr. Clinton over his affair with Monica Lewinsky, a White House intern.

The Republican-led House voted to impeach Mr. Clinton on two counts in 1998. He was acquitted by the Senate.

“In my view, Republicans impeached him for one reason and one reason only — because it was strenuously recommended to us by one Tom DeLay,” Mr. Boehner writes. “Tom believed that impeaching Clinton would win us all these House seats, would be a big win politically, and he convinced enough of the membership and the G.O.P. base that this was true.

He had the look of a man who had looked at himself and hated what he saw. He stepped down shortly thereafter.

It must be hell to live with yourself when you’ve realized what a fake you were for all those years, and to realize how much pain you caused.

I believe in forgiveness, and I hope he finds it. But the damage is done.

That's kind of his thing. That, and belatedly trying to rehabilitate his image and reputation.

What is sobering is that they think the same of our side, and have reasons, however stupid or wrong. Some of what they believe blows my mind.

I have to say, Conservatives are pretty much wrong about everything once the test of time comes to pass. I can’t think of one thing that a progressive espoused that was proven wrong in the end.

but man, what a low bar!!! Pervs, sociopaths and traitors.

I remember when he was inducting Pelosi as speaker... or whatever that process is called when the leader of the minority party gives a little speech, and I think, hands over the gavel... and it was so historic, and he was actually quite gracious, seemingly genuinely so, but he STILL used Democrat as an adjective! It didn't seem like he was trying to be an ass, but they have all been so immersed in the same toxic stew of "owning the libs" for so long, he didn't even realize he was doing it.

If Mr Boehner is trying to sell himself as a country-loving moderate, he's come to the wrong store. Does he think I was asleep the whole time he was stonewalling Mr Obama and inflaming racism and divisiveness?
