Governor signs bill to legalise recreational pot in US state of New Mexico

Source: Associated Press

New Mexico Governor Michelle Lujan Grisham signed legislation today legalising recreational marijuana use within months and kicking off sales next year, making it the seventh state since November to put an end to pot prohibition.

The governor, a Democrat, has supported marijuana reform as a way to create jobs and shore up state revenue.

New Mexico voters ousted ardent opponents of legalization from the state Senate in the 2020 Democratic primary, opening the way for recreational marijuana.

The governor called a special legislative session to tackle the issue in late March after legalization efforts faltered.

Fucking GOP. The nation of Mexico is on the cusp of legal.rec weed, and big, fat, stupid Texas just sits there. They don't want those millions and billions in revenue.

Fucking GOP.

Funniest thing I've seen in ages was a program on legalized cannabis in CO. Toward the end, they visited one of the Camp Cannabis type resorts and interviewed a couple of old gals from OK who'd been curious enough to make the trip. One old gal was having a great time. said she'd never drink again, "drinking just turns you into a redneck!"

NM has been shockingly progressive over the past 15 or so years, greeting marriage equality with a yawn, ending civil asset forfeiture by state and local cops, ending the death penalty, ending qualified immunity for bad cops and other officials, and now legalizing recreational cannabis.

One problem is that they made the taxes on it too high, so the black market can continue to undercut the state pot stores. That's something that can be addressed in the future.

New Mexico is more progressive now for sure. It'll only get more progressive now. Transplants will ensure that.

Californians don't like our winters and people from back east miss the amenities. The rest of us call it the Land of Entrapment, a roach motel for people who fall in love with the high desert.

There could also be blowback coming, I sincerely hope it won't happen, even the GOP governors haven't been all bad.

Oh, and another thing the lege did this year, they got the old antiabortion laws off the books in case the USSC overturns Roe.

That's going to hurt the economy of Southern Colorado. Every town that has a highway connection with NM seems to have at least two or three dispensaries.
