Moderna says new data shows its Covid vaccine is more than 90% effective against virus six months af

Moderna's Covid-19 vaccine was more than 90% effective at protecting against Covid and more than 95% effective against severe disease up to six months after the second dose, the company said Tuesday, citing updated data from its phase three clinical trial.
The update brings Moderna a step closer to filing its request for full U.S. approval for its vaccine. Full approval requires a more rigorous review process to show the shot is safe and effective for its intended use. Once it gets full approval, Moderna can begin marketing the shots directly to consumers and selling them to individuals and private companies in the U.S.
The new data included Covid-19 cases through April 9 and evaluated over 900 cases, including more than 100 severe cases, it said. The vaccine is currently authorized for emergency use by the Food and Drug Administration for people who are age 18 and older, and the agency can revoke the emergency use authorization, or EUA, at any time. Moderna submitted only two months of follow-up safety data for the EUA. The FDA usually requires six months for full approval.
The company said its results are preliminary. Moderna said throughout the year it will share updated data on efficacy against asymptomatic infection as well as the persistence of antibodies.

(44,973 posts)I am assuming if those work well, we will start getting the boosters soon enough.
although the logistics of implementing that would be a bit dicey if available too soon (although I would expect any booster to be incorporated in the current shot's matrix in the future). If they do get good results with the booster, I speculate that they might submit that data with their final application for full vaccine approval.

(129,118 posts)ask for an amended EUA to add it to the current vaccine or I'm thinking they may do their formal application for full approval of the vaccine and amend in the booster at that time.

(1,331 posts)that testing was rushed and all that, but given the alternative, I have no regrets whatsoever about getting both Moderna shots. I'm not at all religious, but maybe this falls in the general area of faith. The people who created it believe in it, so I do too. I have faith in them.
Tomorrow I get my hair professionally cut for the first time in over a year! We still mask everywhere we go, and this hair appt is the first time to be in a public place besides the grocery store or doctor's office. Not even sure what to wear!!

(21,494 posts)Today I called my hairdresser for an appointment. She is booked up until mid May but I grabbed the first opening she had. I have been trimming my own hair for over a year now. It's passable, but definitely not professional looking. Will be nice to have a "real" haircut.

(1,222 posts)Tens of millions have received the vaccine, no one has died, and so very few have had any significant side effects.
Stay safe, be well.

(142 posts)I just my first dose of Moderna a couple days ago. My husband and 18 year old son also got the same vaccine at the same time. 3/4 of our family is now partially vaccinated. My other son will fall into to the 12+ group when he turns 12 in June. I hear there should be something for that age group by the fall.
