New poll shows Americans overwhelmingly oppose anti-transgender laws

Source: PBS NewsHour/NPR/Marist poll

By Matt Loffman

The rights of transgender Americans has been a growing topic of debate on sports fields, in state capitols and in Congress. The Human Rights Campaign, an LGBTQ advocacy organization, says more than 30 state legislatures have proposed more than 115 bills that would limit transgender rights, from participation on sports teams to access to medical care.

But two-thirds of Americans are against laws that would limit transgender rights, a new PBS NewsHour/NPR/Marist poll found. That opposition includes majorities of every political ideology from liberal to conservative and every age group.

These proposed bills have emerged as a new culture war, with Republican state legislators introducing and voting for them amid Democratic opposition, while a majority of Americans who identify as Republicans are against such laws, according to the poll.

“The parties are speaking to their base people,” said Lee Miringoff, the director of the Marist College Institute for Public Opinion, which conducts the poll. “The Democratic coalition is more diverse. It’s broader. The Republicans are speaking to a much narrower base, and that can put you against the overall public opinion within those jurisdictions.”

The idea that a bunch of hate-filled white Republican men can actually pass a law that prevents doctors from treating people is disgusting, and the fact that some have actually done it is despicable.

These are the forces of right-wing evangelical Christian hate.

Did anyone ask to be born? Did anyone ask to be born outside of some narrow definition of what a human male or female should be? The people tormenting transgender people, or minorities, or women, are fine and dandy with tomboys, with Monty Python comedians dressing up like women, or white people wearing blackface. Or co-opting style, slang or music because it is more entertaining than the what their gray world offers. They want diversity packaged with the blandness of white bread, with no worries of embracing different or other. Or they want no diversity at all.

The asses in TX who will make it a crime for parents to support a transgender child don't even take into account that parents might love their children regardless of where they fall on what spectrum.

Heaven is full of angels, who represent the full measure of human diversity. The haters won't ever know that. And Hell is hot all over.

an older tg told me it was Republicans in wealthy areas that have tg girlfriends. I dismissed the idea as looney. Now I'm not so sure there wasn't some basis for the comment.

Large majorities, including republicans, support gun control and many other policies too.

really no-brainers but there are going to be others that will take some finagaling and tweaking to work.
