Two dead, one officer wounded in San Antonio shooting

Two people are dead and an officer and another person are wounded in San Antonio, Texas, after a routine traffic stop turned into a shootout.
San Antonio Police Chief William McManus said at a press conference that the officer who was shot is at the hospital and able to talk.
McManus said all the data he had was preliminary, saying the officer had pulled over a car with three people in it.
During the traffic stop, the driver allegedly pulled out a gun and shot the officer in the hand, police said.

This bullshit bill is nothing more than an abdication of responsibility on the Tx GOP legislators.

(129,071 posts)With respect to the "beyond the pale" outrage - when 20, 6 &7 years old were killed with an "assault-style" weapon - that national disgrace should have been the ultimate wake-up call, and along with the Parkland high school shooting survivors - the survivors, friends, relatives, and activists worked their hearts out trying to lobby for change and were hitting the usual brick walls.
However the biggest one, now forgotten, was when 61 people were killed (including the shooter and 2 others who died some time later as a result) and 860+ were injured as a result of an insane sniper-type attack from a Las Vegas hi-rise hotel, and in a "normal" world, THAT should have triggered SOMETHING to bring about a change. But apparently even that was still not enough.
I know it took James Brady some 13 years after his injury from the assassination attempt on Raygun to finally see his efforts bear some fruit ... but even that was allowed to lapse.
The only good thing is that the NRA has been severely wounded and is limping along (and that was mainly due to internal leadership's greed), but we are seeing the results of their craven role.

(20,875 posts)The person that did the killing was an 18-year old man doing drugs and drinking.
Where did he get the gun?
Where did he get the drugs and the alcohol?
Why is he not in prison?
TOO MUCH OF THIS A LONG TIME AGO.
If young men are so bored they resort to doing drinking and doing drugs and killing others, this country has one hell of a problem on its hands. They need to face it and deal with it instead of pointing fingers.

(129,071 posts)here in Philly this past Wednesday night - https://www.nbcphiladelphia.com/news/local/gunman-shoots-3-people-including-child-in-west-philadelphia/2779361/
with 48 shootings between 4/4/21 - 4/11/21, which has resulted in our being at an almost 40% higher rate than this time last year.
The above shows total shootings (and the portion that were homicides) between 2007 to 2020, and you can see that the higher rates happened under GOP Presidents (Shrub and 45) and the lowest rates occurred under a Democrat - Obama. The hope is that we can get something enacted under Biden to stop the madness (among so many other maddening priorities).
Over the past 30-some years, there was a concerted effort to clear out the old mafia crime syndicates. But nature abhors a vacuum and "new players" have stepped in with the drug trade (heroin/opioids) and gun trade... and social media has helped to magnify petty disputes between teens who then want to "settle scores". Couple that with the gun loopholes plus the ghost guns, a world-wide pandemic and the resultant loss of millions of jobs, and that has brought the nightmare scenario upon us as guns have just proliferated. And as soon as they have gun buy-backs and confiscations, the guns are replaced almost immediately.
