Justice Department sues Trump ally Roger Stone and wife over alleged $2 million in unpaid taxes
Source: CNBC
The Department of Justice sued Roger Stone, the loyal former advisor to ex-President Donald Trump, alleging he and his wife owe nearly $2 million in unpaid federal taxes and other fees.
The lawsuit accuses Stone and Nydia Stone of using an alter ego company in an attempt to shield their personal income from enforced collection and fund a lavish lifestyle.
The civil complaint also alleges the Stones intended to defraud the United States through a fraudulent transfer of money used to buy their house.

(150 posts)The Justice Department filed a civil lawsuit against former President Donald Trump's ally Roger Stone on Friday, accusing him and his wife of owing nearly $2 million in unpaid taxes.
In a six-count civil complaint, investigators said Stone and his wife, Nydia Stone, owed about $1.5 million in unpaid taxes form 2007 and 2011, and an additional $407,000 from 2018.
"The Stones evaded and frustrated the (Internal Revenue Service's) collection efforts" by repeatedly funneling money to a corporate entity they controlled called Drake Ventures, investigators wrote. Stone and his wife then used Drake Ventures account to "fund a lavish lifestyle despite owing nearly $2 million in unpaid taxes, interest and penalties," they wrote.
According to the complaint, the Stones allegedly used the Drake Ventures account to pay for personal expenses like spa visits, haircuts, groceries, restaurants and dentist appointments.

(13,871 posts)(which is usually your best option) the IRS has to have a court order to take your assets. They do have the right to freeze accounts and even seize assets temporarily to keep someone from diverting them, but the taxpayer had the right to have the action presented to a court.

This sounds like criminal tax evasion. Why is the Department of Justice suing (a civil action)?
The IRS already has a judgement against them and they've failed to comply with the judgement. What keeps the IRS from filing a criminal complaint?
