Biden to set new goal of 70 percent of Americans getting at least one vaccine dose by July 4

Source: Washington Post

President Biden on Tuesday will set new benchmarks for the United States to return to pre-pandemic life, setting a goal of 70 percent of adult Americans having at least one vaccine shot by the Fourth of July amid rising pressure for the White House to find ways to expedite a return to normalcy as summer approaches. The president, after surpassing 200 million shots in his first 100 days, also aims to have 160 million Americans — or 60 percent — fully vaccinated by the summer holiday, a date he marked in a March primetime address for America to start to look “more normal.”

Health officials are confident that communities that can achieve a 70 percent vaccination rate will see sharp declines in individual cases, hospitalizations and deaths, a senior administration official said on a call with reporters on Tuesday. Administration officials also expect the Food and Drug Administration to soon issue an “emergency use authorization” enabling adolescents 12 to 15 years old to receive the Pfizer-BioNTech coronavirus vaccine, opening up vaccinations to millions more people. But in the past week, some health experts have criticized Biden and the White House for not better demonstrating the perks of getting vaccinated, a key step they say is necessary in overcoming vaccine hesitancy.

After a surge of vaccinations over the past few months, supply of the vaccine has started to outstrip demand as hesitancy becomes the Biden administration’s most significant hurdle in immunizing more Americans. So far, about 40 percent of adult Americans are fully vaccinated, but polls suggest that a significant portion of the population does not plan to get inoculated. Some have criticized Biden for continuing to wear a mask outside, even though he is fully vaccinated, despite guidance from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention that immunized people do not need to wear masks outdoors if they are not in crowds.

The president, they say, should model how restrictions can be relaxed once someone is vaccinated, to encourage more people to do so. The Biden administration finds itself in a difficult position, however, as the science remains unsettled on what is and is not safe as more Americans get vaccinated. The president must model appropriate public health behavior for the entire country, public health officials say, including areas where infections remain high. Cases remain stubbornly high at about 50,000 new confirmed infections each day — a number several experts said is likely an undercount given lower rates of testing — and about 700 deaths per day. “You’ve got this balancing act.

Biden doesn't set goals unless he's really confident he can meet them. And if 70% of people get at least one dose, they've already moved beyond vaccine hesitancy, which makes it a lot easier to ensure they go through with the second dose.

I know people keep throwing out 80% as the magic number, but 70% should make a huge difference - especially with eligibility of children right around the corner.

instead of the term "herd immunity", which IMHO is idiotic for this type of virus, is that our goal should be what was drummed into everyone's head a year ago - "flatten the curve"... and by doing that, you REDUCE "community spread", and vaccines help you get there.

And when get it out of the community, you limit the opportunities for the virus to mutate and you will have less viral load shed by someone who might have been "vaccinated" but was still infected.

Anything good for America or good for democrats is a NO. A full stop NO. This is their civil war, sitting out free vaccines that can save their lives and help America move forward. They say NO.

It's true. They just never grew up.

in the slightest. They just continue repeating whatever it is they're told in the RW media, that this virus is a hoax and fake news. They're like sheep watching other sheep step over the cliff and they're laughing about it as they step closer themselves. Meanwhile, they drag the rest of society down with them and their stupid childish, but also sinister and evil beliefs.

for yet another year and a half for airline travelers. Could, would, should such include vac status criteria to obtain and a re-design of same going forward? I know some are already compliant and received same, but but but...it's not the same as a US Passport so...Wouldn't want to start an international or inter-state incident involving a foreign or domestic hotspot, notwithstanding variants lurking about like terrorists!
