Ohio GOP calls on U.S. Rep. Anthony Gonzalez to resign for voting to impeach Donald Trump

COLUMBUS, Ohio—Ohio Republican Party leaders on Friday passed resolutions censuring U.S. Rep. Anthony Gonzalez and calling on him to resign for voting in January to impeach ex-President Donald Trump.

Gonzalez, from Rocky River, is the latest Republican to be rebuked by their state parties for supporting impeachment proceedings against Trump in January. Trump was impeached by the U.S. House for inciting a riot at the U.S. Capitol as President Joe Biden’s electoral victory was being certified, though the Senate did not vote to convict him.

One resolution, offered by Shannon Burns of Strongsville, calls on Gonzalez to resign, claiming he “betrayed his constituents,” “demonstrated a hidden vendetta against” Trump, and “relied on his emotions rather than the will of his constituents and any credible facts” in voting to impeach.

Burns said about 5,000 people signed a petition urging Gonzalez to resign. Two leading Republicans vying for outgoing U.S. Sen. Rob Portman’s seat, ex-Treasurer Josh Mandel and ex-Ohio GOP Chair Jane Timken, have also called for Gonzalez to step down.

What did Adolf Hitler know?

He knew that information is an extremely powerful weapon that can be used to drive opinion. He knew that information, true or false, could be used to shape a political agenda. He knew that words and images uttered repeatedly and deliberately, regardless of truthfulness, become accepted and part of the way people think and perceive others. This can be used to ignite prejudices, paint individuals and groups, initiate opportunistic greed and other anti-social tendencies, transform dissent into hatred, and even turn citizen against citizen.

Hitler discovered that as long as he could control what media people accepted that he could write the message. Hitler proved that controlling information was even more important than controlling the military and the economy. Hitler believed that it was “good fortune for governments that people do not think.” Information he offered about his policies was sketchy and in some cases inept, but what he did was based on the idea that most individuals are conformists who do not think for themselves.

One of the Nazi tricks of the trade was to manipulate public opinion through distortions, euphemisms, name-calling, fear, social pressure (you are either for us or against us) and denigrating minorities. If information reported by the press was anti-Nazi, even though true, bona fide and indisputable, the Nazi machine would rail against the reported information. The Nazi machine would, repeatedly, say the information was not true, and do so ad nauseam until there was doubt in people’s minds. And it would still continue until people felt the information was false or the Nazis wouldn’t still be railing against it. By repeatedly hammering words, phrases and ideas into a citizen’s thinking and by making it part of the culture, the propaganda becomes part of the language. Then no one stops to question the ideas and from where they originate. The purpose is to eliminate the capacity for critical thinking, thoughtful deliberation and discourse.

No wonder Portman is jumping ship. At this rate I wonder if Mike DeWine (who turns 75 next year) will even run for re-election. DeWine has deviated somewhat from mainstream Republican orthodoxy with his endorsement of red flag gun restrictions and COVID public health orders -the conservative backlash was so strong his health department director had to resign!

The Ohio Republican Party is no longer the same party that produced President William Howard Taft, Senator and Attorney General William Saxbe (the Attorney General during Nixon's final months), and Cleveland Mayor/Governor/Senator George Voinovich.

It died out for a couple weeks after the election, but i's been building back up recently. More signs, more upside down US flags and Bro-Truck dreadnaughts flying Trump banners beam to beam.

The kook on the corner is selling that cult merch 7 days a week. Some are getting more insistent that we rename Mosquito Lake in honor "for all the things he did for us"..

Sometimes I wonder if there's something wrong with me, but the party has actually gone from William Taft to Bob Taft and worse. Governor Rhodes would be tossed from the party today as a RINO.

I am not that far from Cortland. Still Trump signs up in scattered places. Every time I drive by one I roll down my window and scream “he lost, you fucking idiot.” I am sorely tempted to walk into the Portage County Republican HQ in Ravenna and tell them that I want to feel first hand standing in the presence of a cult of anti-democratic, anti-American zealots.

Didn’t Rhodes send the Guard to Kent State? That wouldn’t be reactionary psychotic enough for the Party today.
