Fauci Says Indoor Mask Guidance Should Ease With Vaccinations

Dr. Anthony S. Fauci said on Sunday that he was open to relaxing indoor masking rules as more Americans get vaccinated against the virus, just two days after the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention belatedly emphasized the danger of airborne transmission.

Dr. Fauci, President Biden’s chief medical adviser for the pandemic, said that as vaccinations climb, “we do need to start being more liberal” in terms of rules for wearing masks indoors, though he noted that the nation was still averaging about 43,000 cases of the virus daily. “We’ve got to get it much, much lower than that,” he said.

Dr. Fauci's comments on Sunday came in response to a question about comments that Dr. Scott Gottlieb, the former head of the Food and Drug Administration, made last week on CNBC. He said that relaxing indoor mask mandates now — “especially in environments where you know you have a high level of vaccination”— would give public health officials “the credibility to implement them” again in the fall or winter if cases surge again.

Dr. Fauci, asked by George Stephanopoulos on ABC’s Sunday program “This Week” whether he agreed, said: “I think so, and I think you’re going to probably be seeing that as we go along, and as more people get vaccinated.”

1. I will only go maskless around family and friends who are fully vaccinated.

Luckily they are all being vaccinated, so it's just a matter of time till we can all get together. It's been a long year for all of us.

4. The moving goalposts

Not sure Fauci is doing anyone any favors being all over the map with these pronouncements that are constantly changing.

Once Biden's goal of 70% of Americans getting at least 1 shot of the vaccine is met the vast majority of Americans are going to ditch their masks.

As of 5/7, that number is 111M fully vaccinated and 150M with at least 1 dose/partially vaccinated, totalling 261M (of 331M Americans) or 79% of the US with at least 1 dose of vaccine.

6. Unfortunately your interpretation of the data is wrong.

The at least one dose group includes the fully vaccinated group. We're a long ways away from getting to 70%.

9. Then that should be explicitly stated

assuming you are correct. If the CDC or state or John Hopkins or whoever is going to put out this information, it should be clear about numbers in each category.

It should be there are x number people vaccinated.
Of x number total, y number are fully vaccinated by either 2 shot regimine or 1 shot J&J
Of x number total, z number have received 1 dose of 2 shot regimine.

3. I don't really care too much about what Fauci or The CDC says. I made it for over a year

by masking, distancing and sanitizing before getting vaccinated and I don't plan to stop
what has worked so well. Then, when the next pandemic hits us I won't have to change
anything.

5. I'm inclined to agree. Besides, my

county health department's website ranks the local infection rate at "substantial." I am vaccinated, but I am also a senior with health issues, so there is still a risk for me of a breakthrough infection. I will continue as I have been for the past year and a half.

Except at home or with vaccinated covid-free friends, wear a mask... Aerosol....

I/we have known about the dangers of aerosol transmission since about this time last year,---many studies, demonstrations, etc.

Viral scientists have known for ages.... about the aerosol transmission of virus, or farts or cigarette smoke, etc etc...

Here is just one example- discussing, masks, time spent and ventilation efficacy.

Why is the CDC so often behind.....??
