California parents act heroically when gunman fires upon family, killing two

Source: CNN

Los Angeles (CNN) -- A father and mother showed heroism when a gunman opened fired inside their California home before dawn Saturday, but two members of the family couldn't overcome their wounds, Inglewood police said.

The mother ran from the house carrying her youngest child, though she was shot in both legs, in an "extraordinary rescue attempt," police said. The 4-year-old boy, however, was shot in the head and later died in surgery. The mother was in critical but stable condition Saturday afternoon.

Inside the house, the father used his body as a shield in trying to protect the other three children.

Despite the father's efforts, the gunfire wounded two of his children: a 6-year-old boy in the pelvis and a 7-year-old girl in the chest. Both were in critical but stable condition, police said. The father later died in surgery of multiple gunshot wounds.

DU does report on tragic events. If you don't like reading about them, there is a little 'x' that will allow you to hide the posts.

this is maybe the worst comment i've read on DU in some time. Just the mindset of the person who could even come up with it must be so... sad? disturbed? scary?

Parents not thinking about their own lives and trying to protect their children. That is a beautiful thing. Here's a man with a gun and Dad doesn't run, he throws himself in front of his kids. There is real love in this world. That's a point, I think; that's an important point.

The OP is known in the gun control forum for “Google dumping” various stories of illegal gun use and then trying to extrapolate that all gun ownership is bad from the criminal misuse of firearms by a minority of both the society as a whole and the subset of law abiding gun owners.

I suspect that he/she is doing so here hoping to find a somewhat more sympathetic audience.

should be able to decide for themselves whether or not they should own a fire arm and of what type.

Do you consider your self a Brady Campaigner? If so, do you actually donate to them?

equal rights for marriage and getting the HELL out of Afghanistan (Which should be an American issue not a Progressive one)

IMO single payer health care which would (clearly) give better access the mental health care may well have prevented this tragedy

Using the normal DU metric what can be infered from this?

To Rmoney's statement that 2-parents families don't experience gun violence. It will be interesting to learn what prompted this horrible event, but meanwhile, I am sickened and saddened by such a seemingly senseless crime. Best wishes to the survivors. Hope the two children heal and are able to deal with the aftermath.

I would do the same, but since it's never happened to me how would I know. It's one of those primal split second decisions that is impossible to fathom.

Yesterday I was in a national park with my family when a couple of guys in the parking lot got into a fight over one cutting the other off. It started with one of them giving the other the finger, then one got out of his car and called the other guy out, screaming he'd beat him up. The other guy stayed in his car but reached over to his glove box. I don't know what get into my mind, but I went over to the car of the guy who was out screaming. He had 3 cross country bikes on the back of his car right over his licence plate so it looked like I was looking at his plate (which I actually was). The guy ran over to me, started yelling at me, asking what I was doing, at which point I started a conversation about his bikes. I just started asking stupid questions to distract him, the other guy squealed out, left, and it was over. The guy who was yelling had a woman, probably his wife/partner and 1 kid in his car.

All this over.. what? What's the use? At what possible cost? The world's gone mad.

It wouldn't surprise me to learn that the motive was born out a mental illness of some type.

He and the family rented houses on the same property, and he was getting evicted for not payinghis rent for quite awhile. For some reason, he blamed the family, and went on a rampage against them. So sad...
