With cases falling in Europe, Asia and North America, and flat in Africa, South America is the only region where new infections are rising rapidly on a per capita basis, according to Our World in Data. Although India is currently struggling through one of the worlds worst outbreaks of the pandemic.
On average in May, 31% of the COVID-19 deaths in the world have been in Latin America and the Caribbean - home to just 8.4% of the global population.
Doctors and epidemiologists say the coronavirus pandemic took unprepared governments by surprise last year and its impact has been worsened by leaders who downplayed its gravity and failed to secure timely vaccine supplies.
The top eight countries registering the most COVID-19 deaths per capita over the past week were all in Latin America.

(23,102 posts)We were supposed to go with them this summer, but have gotten refunds on all our tickets. Although we are fully vaccinated, I don't feel safe going to a place where it's still running rampant and their vaccination program is atrocious. My daughters' MIL is 74 and she just got her first shot 2 weeks ago and will get the 2nd one in 2 more weeks. last I heard, less then 10% of their population has been vaccinnated.

(497 posts)... as if they were the same thing. But much of Latin America is in North America or Central America. So it's not clear just what claim the article is making, especially since it doesn't specifically identify the eight countries with the worst Covid death rates over the past week.

(22,129 posts)horrible disease. Another policy failing of the trump administration in NOT leading the world against this dreaded disease (remember the former leadership role that the US had formerly that rump squandered away?).
In the decades to come, trump will be remembered as the former idiotic PINO (pres. in name only) of the US that squandered the lives of tens and tens of thousands and thousands by declaring COVID 19 a hoax. By failing to act decisively and quickly, this disease became far more embedded and he continued to make the situation worse.
He ridiculously advocated injecting bleach or other disinfectants and/or swallowing UV lights somehow, as well as pushing his idiotic cure of Hydroxychloroquine repeatedly, regardless of this drug being proven ineffective against COVID 19.
What a moron. May he suffer.
