Farmers buy land, make camp by shut Oregon irrigation canal
Source: AP
KLAMATH FALLS, Ore. (AP) Two farmers with ties to anti-government activist Ammon Bundy have purchased land by a shut-off irrigation canal in Oregon that would normally deliver water to a massive federal irrigation project along the California-Oregon border and have set up a protest encampment there, Jefferson Public Radio reports.
The move comes after federal regulators shut off all water deliveries from the projects main A Canal due to extreme drought and the need to balance the water demands of farmers with threatened and endangered fish species in the Upper Klamath Lake and Klamath River.
The last time water was substantially cut off to farmers, in 2001, demonstrators forced open the canals head gates three times before federal marshals arrived and stayed all summer. They also held a bucket brigade that attracted national media attention and stirred calls by some in the Republican Party for a re-examination of the Endangered Species Act.
The two men who purchased the land near the canal, Dan Nielsen and Grant Knoll, have set up an information center at the site along with local members of the Oregon chapter of People's Rights Network, a group founded by Bundy last year, the radio station reported.

Bundy won't leave Oregon alone.

Someone, I think Thom Hartmann, pointed this out. Seems like an accurate observation to me.
Expect more of these dimwitted stunts in the next few years.

Don't these raving lunatics know what the word "drought" means?
I sympathize with farmers who are suffering the effects of the massive western drought that's been largely in place since the mid 90s, but the theft of too little water is not the answer. We'd be in Dust Bowl II if farming methods hadn't improved after the first one, and strict water management has to be part of that.
Maybe Ammon needs somebody to tell him he's bothering the wrong god. The one he's made in his own image doesn't seem to be listening to his orders to end the drought.

(50,560 posts)And considering what she is, thats not easy. Our only hope next year is that the insane parts of the Idaho Republican Party split the nutso vote between her and Bundy to the extent the comparatively benign Brad Little makes it to the general election.

(9,667 posts)as a republican in our closed primary. Again.
Kooky-eyed McGeachin is positioning herself for bigger things with a pit stop at the Governors office, I think. Giddings and Scott might be waiting in the wings for an opening but may be happy enough where they're at, fluffing whoever is on the move - and there are plenty of others to fill their clown shoes.
I don't think this state will see the likes of a Cecil Andrus again, but I would be okay if a Phil Batt or John Evans type had some inclination and momentum to advance. I even had some hope for Little but that faded. Especially this years sessiom. If Idaho were a Texas or Kansas, we would be long gone and outta here but it has so much to offer otherwise, other than its' politics, that we are bound to it.
One day we have to get back up into your neck of the woods and get reacquainted with the North.

(11,122 posts)The list of white men breaking laws, destroying property, and making a mockery of our law enforcement agencies is too long. Nothing ever seems to happen to them. A black or brown man would be in prison for 40 years for half of what Bundy has done.
Yet on they go. Making the news. Breaking laws. And the government just bends over backward to make sure that they don't get mad or upset. If cliven bundy had gone to jail in 2014, trump would never have become president.
