Ohio Woman Wins A Million Dollars For Being Vaccinated
Source: NPR
Abbigail Bugenske of Silverton near Cincinnati is Ohio's first million-dollar winner in a series of lotteries intended to encourage more people to get vaccinated against COVID-19.
Joseph Costello of Englewood near Dayton won a full college scholarship in the lottery for people under age 18 who've been vaccinated.
Amid dropping vaccine demand in Ohio, Gov. Mike DeWine announced the five weekly drawings of $1 million open to residents who've received at least one dose of a COVID-19 vaccine. The scholarship lottery for teenagers offers five full, four-year scholarships to a public university in Ohio - room and board included.
"The number of Ohioans who get the vaccine will determine what our future looks like, particularly this coming winter," DeWine said in a statewide address Wednesday. "Everyone has a stake in more Ohioans getting vaccinated."...

(18,636 posts)...The money is earmarked for ridding the state of Covid , and the best way to do that is "roll up our sleeves" as they say. Vaccines went up significantly when this program was announced, and will likely continue over the next 4 weeks.
They could have spent it on commercials and PSAs, but we know that won't work with half the state.

(41,146 posts)and most people. Sadly you're correct about the influence of PSAs, commericals.
Have The Hunger Games arrived?
with you. Scholarships are fine, but adults-really! Do the adult thing and get vaccinated for Covid and when flu season comes around get a flu shot.

(25,862 posts)stores today I (Kohl's and Target) without a mask because I'm fully vaccinated. Hooray for me!

(5,906 posts)Please keep wearing your mask, indoors, at least for a while until the anti-vaxxers have either gotten immunity or have died off. I'm also fully vaccinated and past the two-week point, but I still wear it when I go into stores. It just provides an extra level of protection against the (admittedly rare) breakthrough case.
YMMV
PoindexterOglethorpe
(25,862 posts)since I'm fully vaccinated. The "breakthrough" cases are so rare and so mild, the CDC has stopped counting them.
I really wish people would stop obsessively sanitizing everything. It's no necessary, to say the least.

(8,311 posts)It's air-conditioned and I was lucky enough to order some good ones that have lasted through all the washings I've given them, from an Etsy crafter, that fit my face very well. And I don't wear glasses in public (probably do need a set of prescription reading glasses, though) so I don't have lens-fog to deal with.
Yes, I'm two weeks past my second shot, and I'm confident enough in the vaccine's ability to protect me from serious illness that eventually I will probably come to the decision that if other adults aren't vaccinated it's on them if I don't know I've got a breakthrough infection and am out.
Given my state's weather patterns, I think my tolerance for being wiling to mask when not under AC and my tolerance for people who refuse to get the vaccine despite the fact a lot of us have been guinea pigs and no reports of third arms growing, etc. will probably end in August.

(6,918 posts)Sorry, Im not buying it. A million dollar cash prize for doing your civic duty is a ridiculous waste of money.
It makes a mockery of everyone else already vaccinated. Next pandemic, people will wait for the million dollar cash prize before acting.
