Manchin blasts McConnell for playing politics on Jan. 6 bill

Source: The Hill

Sen. Joe Manchin (D-W.Va.) on Thursday blasted Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-Ky.) for playing politics over a bill establishing a bipartisan commission to investigate the Jan. 6 riots at the U.S. Capitol.

Manchin issued a strongly-worded statement saying there was "no excuse" for Republicans to vote against the commission, and accused McConnell of blocking the commission to help the GOP avoid the topic ahead of the 2022 midterm elections, when the Senate majority will be in play.

"There is no excuse for any Republican to vote against the commission since Democrats have agreed to everything they asked for," Manchin said.

"Mitch McConnell has made this his political position, thinking it will help his 2022 elections. They do not believe the truth will set you free, so they continue to live in fear," he said.

Uh Joe your stance on the filibuster has helped enable this asshole. The filibuster might be okay if the intent was sincere deliberation but McTurdhole has turned it into a minority driven veto of any legislation he doesn't like.

Seriously, I wouldn't care if an extra $Billion or so was thrown to West Virginia if it meant Manchin getting on board with seeing that the infrastructure / jobs voting rights bills get passed.

Shelley Capito, the current W.Va. Republican US Senator, won over her Democratic challenger by 70.3% to 27.0% in 2020, while Manchin only beat his challenger by 49.6% to 46.3% in 2018.

W.Va. has been trending heavily Republican in recent years. Manchin knows the odds are against him in 2024. Joe's trying to figure out how to support Biden's agenda while appearing to obstruct it at the same time.

to neuter McConnell. It's time to use that power before McConnell scuttles all legislation to help the American people and expose the Republicans who contributed to the failed coup d'etat.

couldn't Biden empower a President's commission like the Warren Commission? (No JFK assassination asides here, please.)

Johnson created the Warren Commission by executive order, but Congress had to pass a bill to give it the power to compel testimony and evidence.

And Manchin is the poster boy for what remains of the Dixiecrats. That said, Manchin wants to still be in the Senate majority after next year and he won't be if he remains the 51st Republican senator and stands back and stands by as the cultists continue their predations on behalf of Trump.

Fruitless in my mind, but a valid effort to show Republicans a way back to reality. Senator Manchin, you can't work with those folks. You need to go whole Democrat.

His GOP "friends" have abandoned all pretense of potential bipartisanship, and Manchin will hopefully conclude the best he can do is reform the filibuster to save not only his friends but the country.
