USPS raises stamp price to 58 cents as part of DeJoy's 10-year plan
Source: Washington Post
The U.S. Postal Service is raising rates on letters, magazines and marketing missives as much as 6.9 percent this summer, sending the cost of a first-class stamp from 55 to 58 cents, as the agency leans into an expansive restructuring plan that codifies slower mail delivery and streamlines agency operations. The rate structure announced Friday represents the latest installment of Postmaster General Louis DeJoys plan to erase a projected $160 billon in liabilities over the next decade.
The agency has struggled for the better part of a year with inconsistent delivery service and soaring package volumes that have gridlocked its processing network. The Postal Services on-time delivery scores have not topped 90 percent since July 2020. DeJoys 10-year Delivering for America plan, announced in March, calls for longer delivery windows, shorter post office hours and fewer staff. The agency sent out reduction in force, or layoff, notices to hundreds of management-level employees Friday morning.
An agency spokesman could not say how many workers would be affected, and Brian Wagner, president of the National Association of Postal Supervisors, said in a Friday interview that he had not been informed of the figures, either. Many impacted employees could accept vacant positions or demotions to stay on with the Postal Service. Ive told our members that we will work through these challenging times with this restructuring and this [reduction in force], Wagner said. Well support them through all this. But theres plenty of open positions for people who want one.
More rate increases could be on the way. The Postal Service on Friday raised prices exclusively for market dominant mail, or items such as letters, postcards and marketing mail over which it maintains a monopoly by law. The agency has signaled it will raise prices on other products including package shipping, on which it competes fiercely with UPS, FedEx and Amazon in the coming weeks.

(43,173 posts)The explanations are legendary, and often repetitive. Retiree health care prefunding mandated by Congress, fuel price increases, and when that one doesn't apply, vehicle upgrades, then when inflation ticks up it's rising costs. Rinse and repeat every year.
In the Great Recession, my local PO's were cold in the lobby. For awhile the lobbies were uncleaned. Now they are spotless, toasty warm in the winter, cool as ice in the summer, there is a cleaning lady who comes in, and have your PO windows been tinted? I suspect this is energy saving reflective because at all hours of the day it looks from the outside like the PO is closed because the lights are off - but they're not.
The cost of shipping is becoming prohibitive, PO Box rents continue upward. What was $16 twenty years ago is $94 now. Put that in your inflation calculator.
I don't see cost cutting, I see a full service organization moving forward by raising prices far beyond what inflation requires.

(10,003 posts)Theyll pass costs along to customers if possible, but more expensive products may mean lost sales. Unfortunately, since this is happening on Bidens watch, Democrats will get the blame for higher business costs. Why is no one besides DeJoy evaluating the current USPS and offering alternative ways to bolster it? DeJoys goal is to privatize it, not make it successful. If Biden fails to get rid of DeJoy, he and Democrats will be blamed for every bad action DeJoy takeslike firing lots of people. My post office is already short staffed. There is rarely more than one counter worker at a time, except around Christmas.

(129,061 posts)where new nominees had been submitted to the Senate for confirmation hearings and who were approved by the requisite Senate committee a month ago. I don't know when they have scheduled the final vote for them however. I would hope that what just dropped today per the OP, would light some kind of fire to get the new people confirmed and in place to have what will be a majority-D Board, start looking for a new Postmaster General.
Unfortunately there is so damn much damage that was done the past 4 years that is trying to be rectified, and it's a matter of getting the stuff prioritized where it's only been just over 4 months since the inauguration.
It's bad enough Biden had to deal with stonewalling of the previous adminstration's leadership during the transition and even recently being forced to fire hangers-on from an Architecture Arts panel who refused to resign, where other embedded appointees from the previous admin in general have been whining and were told to pound sand.

(13,920 posts)Prevent enough vote by mail to change the election in the mean time, maybe we can replace enough board members who might be willing to replace him to get him out.
Or ya know, we could push the issue sooner. If enough democrats want Biden to force the issue, perhaps we could get to restoring the PO before the next election?

(129,061 posts)I think there is a 3rd that still has to be confirmed.
quakerboy
(13,920 posts)Once the third is confirmed, that means the board will have 3 Biden appointees and 6 trump appointees who support Dejoy.
We need two more to get to a majority opposition. And that wont happen until after the next election, unless Biden asks for resignations or fires someone in the near future.

(129,061 posts)I.e., the Board cannot be all one party affiliation.
The Democrats and an Independent (regardless of who appointed them) are -
Ron A. Bloom (Democrat made chair by Biden although appointed by 45)
Donald L. Moak (Democrat appointed by 45)
Ron Stroman (Democrat appointed by Biden and just confirmed)
Amber McReynolds (Independent appointed by Biden and just confirmed)
Anton Hajjar (Democrat appointed by Biden awaiting confirmation)
The option for the first 2 may be to comply or be removed. Plus there is one GOP seat up this year (John McLeod Barge).
It's unfortunate that due to Turtle blocking many of Obama's nominees - particularly for the courts, decisions had to be made of who to nominate for what and judges took precedence while the Postal Board had vacancies for some time until 45 suddenly appointed enough to get DeJoy selected in order to disrupt the mail voting.

(13,920 posts)I really dont care what their technical affiliation is if 6 of 9 support leaving dejoy in to enact the continued destruction and dysfunction of the USPS.
I also havnt heard a call from Biden for Dejoy to be replaced. Did i miss that?

Bidens Postal Service Board Nominees Move ForwardBut It Still Might Not Be Enough To Oust DeJoy
Alison Durkee Forbes Staff
(snip)
The three nominees did not signal during their confirmation hearings last week whether they would vote to fire DeJoythough theyre widely expected to vote in favor of his ouster if confirmedand said they had not faced any outside pressure to do so.
(snip)
What To Watch For
It right now seems unlikely that there will be the five votes necessary to immediately fire DeJoy even if the three members are confirmed, as the two existing Democrats on the boardparticularly board chair Ron Bloomhave backed DeJoy in the past and have not suggested they would vote him out. Right now, I think [DeJoys] the proper man for the job, Bloom told the Atlantic in April. Hes earned my support, and he will have it until he doesnt. And I have no particular reason to believe he will lose it. Blooms term on the board has technically expiredhes now serving a one-year holdover termso his support for DeJoy could result in Biden not naming him for a second term, something the Washington Post reports Democrats have been pushing the president to do. Beyond Bloom, Biden will next have the opportunity to fill a board vacancy with another potential no vote on DeJoy when board member John Bargers term expires in December.

So we have to stay tuned...

(129,061 posts)There were 3 vacancies and an additional one from last December who had been temporarily extended. Three nominees were submitted and 2 were confirmed. I think once they get the full compliment, IMHO they need to move on doing a search for a replacement Postmaster General, post haste.
Meanwhile the House Oversight Committee started working on legislation on Post Office reform a couple weeks ago - https://www.reuters.com/world/us/congressional-panel-take-up-us-postal-reform-bill-2021-05-10/

(87 posts)Of course, the GOP plan is to try to make the USPS look like it's expensive and incompetent so they can privatize it.
The USPS is still the best value. No private service like FedEx, UPS, etc. can touch them for coverage and cost.
We need to get rid of DeJoy and his ilk. If they manage to kill the USPS, we won't be paying .58 for a letter. We will be paying far, far more and a bunch of that will go into rich CEO's pockets.

(42,282 posts)Well, the last time was for my Mom a few weeks ago...I'm not sure I use 20 stamps a year anymore. I do bill pay online and almost never send cards thru the mail, haven't written a letter in years (other than e-mail).
Admittedly, I switched to online bill pay more last year after several payments got lost under this creep's mismanagement.
BumRushDaShow
(129,061 posts)charge an "administrative fee" for paying online that is almost 3 times the price of a stamp.
During the pandemic after Dejoy started screwing with the mail, I was doing more online but I try to support the P.O. and will mail bills to companies who have had their online systems hacked in the past.
I do still send holiday cards in the mail though. When they went with the "forever" stamps, that sortof lets you ride out increases. I have used Priority Mail boxes more than UPS for stuff too.

(129,061 posts)I like to choose how and when to pay - and for online, I want to do it "manually" and not "auto-deduct". Yet here in Philly with PECO, they have this nonsense - either enroll for auto-deduction every month or fee if you want to pay online -
Power Pay is an automatic bill payment option. You can save time, checks and stamps and never miss a payment by having your PECO billing amount deducted directly from your checking or savings account. You will still receive a monthly statement so you can see how much energy you used and how much will be deducted on the due date. Continue to pay your bill by check until the bank statement shows the withdrawal from your account. You can enroll online at www.peco.com/service or by completing the application on the back of your monthly bill stub.
Can I make an online or phone payment without enrolling in Power Pay?
You can make an online or phone payment without enrolling in Power Pay with your debit, credit card or checking account information at the cost of $2.35 per transaction.
Please allow 2 to 3 business days for your payment to be posted to your PECO account even though the funds are instantly withdrawn from your financial institution.

I'll put the stamp on the envelope.
I have had problems with auto-deduction crap in the past where there was a property buy-out (rental) and/or a change in the "payment system", forcing re-signing up again, which can be a mess. I refuse. Plus I recall reading a sad article a few years ago where a woman had all her bills auto-deducted every month and eventually something happened, and she had died at home (but no one was aware), yet the bills were still being deducted until her bank account was emptied. Then late payment notices were sent out (that were obviously unanswered) and eventually notices about unpaid mortgage payments started, resulting in a default, and her house put up for sheriff sale. It wasn't until that point when someone finally went inside and found she had been dead for several years.

(42,282 posts)Most of my bills are paid thru my bank's system which is free---and some of those are mailed, a little tidbit I found out when one payment went missing! Fortunately, we got a courtesy call telling us they hadn't received the money and I was able to take care of it without penalty.
