Montana Man John Russell Howald Indicted on Hate Crime Charges for Allegedly Firing Gun Into Victim's House
BY DANIEL VILLARREAL ON 6/3/21 AT 12:14 AM EDT

A Montana man named John Russell Howald has been charged with hate crime and a firearm violation for allegedly firing a gun into a person's house because he wanted to kill them for being gay.

On March 22, 2020, in Basin, Montana, Howald allegedly shot into an individual's home while stating that he wanted to "get rid of the lesbians [and] gays," according to a federal grand jury indictment. Howald allegedly directed anti-gay slurs against his victim, who was gay.

Howald will return to court for an arraignment scheduled on June 29. If convicted, he could receive a lifelong prison sentence for the hate crime charge and a mandatory minimum 10-year prison sentence for the gun charge.

In 2006, Howald was convicted on a charge of animal cruelty after he shot a chocolate Labrador dog several times and beheaded it with a chainsaw. The charge appeared on a Montana Department of Corrections database cited by the legal news website Law and Crime.

Montana Man Previously Convicted for Beheading Dog with Chainsaw Faces New Anti-Gay Hate Crime Charges

A federal grand jury in Billings, Montana returned an indictment charging a Basin man with a hate crime and a firearm offense for allegedly firing a gun into another individual’s home because of their perceived sexual orientation and threatening them with “violent homophobic slurs,” the Department of Justice announced Wednesday.

. . .

According to a Montana Department of Corrections database, Howald was convicted in 2006 on one charge of cruelty to animals after he shot a chocolate Labrador dog several times and then beheaded the animal at a public campsite in Montana. A spokesperson for the U.S. Attorney’s Office in Montana confirmed that the John Russell Howald convicted in the 2006 incident was the same John Russell Howald charged in the hate crime incident.

The Independent Record in 2005 reported that Howald “pursued the wounded Lab around the side of a trailer and then into the trees and shot at it a number of times, then came back to the campsite and got a chainsaw and severed the dog’s head.”

“Howald then allegedly drove to a campsite occupied by Mike and Brenda Sullivan of Butte and threw the severed head of their dog at them, saying ‘Here is your fucking dog back,'” the report stated.

From the Law and Crime link:

Howald was initially charged with felony counts of aggravated animal cruelty, attempted aggravated animal cruelty, tampering with evidence, criminal endangerment, and two charges of intimidation. He served 24 months behind bars for the animal cruelty charge.

You gotta be f$%#ing kidding me.
