Terry McAuliffe wins Democratic gubernatorial primary in Virginia, CNN projects
Source: CNN
Tysons Corner, Virginia (CNN)Former Virginia Gov. Terry McAuliffe will be the commonwealth's Democratic gubernatorial nominee, CNN projected on Tuesday, besting four other primary challengers as he seeks to become the first person in decades to serve multiple terms as top executive of a commonwealth that bars governors from serving consecutive terms.
McAuliffe's win sets a general election between the former governor and Republican businessman Glenn Youngkin. The race in Virginia, one of two states that hold off-year elections for governor after presidential elections, will be closely watched in Washington, DC, and beyond as it is often seen as a bellwether for the subsequent midterms.
Since the 1970s, the winner of Virginia's gubernatorial election came from the party opposite the one that had won the White House -- the one exception was when McAuliffe was elected in 2013 a year after Barack Obama had won his second term, a fact the former governor has often used on the campaign trail.
McAuliffe won this year's primary by besting a quartet of other Democrats, including former Virginia Del. Jennifer Carroll Foy and Del. Lee Carter, both of whom attacked McAuliffe from the left, and Sen. Jennifer McClellan and Lt. Gov. Justin Fairfax, who have argued they were more prepared to succeed Democratic Gov. Ralph Northam.

(24,333 posts)I was okay with all of them (Though, my non-Virginia self doesn't count in voting)
Hopefully, he'll destroy Youngkin
He probably should. But... never take anything for granted

(1,634 posts)Terry McAuliffe for Governor
Hala Ayala for Lt Governor
Mark Herring for Attorney General (incumbent)
Dr. Douglas Ward for HD-18 (my district)
I doubt that Dr. Ward will win in a deep red district but I'm confident the others will win.

(54,433 posts)He will keep a close eye on statewide politics and try to keep Virginia in the Democratic column. I lived in the Democratic part of VA when I was younger (i.e. NoVa), so I never had to suffer too many crazies while I was there. When my parents moved to the house in Falls Church, it was 1955, and only dirt roads led to the house I grew up in. But then roads were paved, the Federal Government grew, and before we knew it, we had become « Washington suburbs. » We also went from rural right wing boondocks to educated communities, and therefore Democratic majority, if a hard-fought one.

(67,782 posts)Delegate Lee Carter and Jennifer Carroll Foy. They finished 2nd and 5th.
Final result:
Terry McAuliffe 303,038 62.3%
Jennifer Carroll Foy 96,174 19.8%
Jennifer McClellan 56,341 11.6%
Justin Fairfax 17,206 3.5%
Lee Carter 13,469 2.8%
Even more interesting is that Carter also lost the Democratic Primary for Delegate in his own District. He posted a less than "gracious" Delegate seat concession on Twitter:

I hope he doesn't take the election lightly, although he should be a shoo-in.

(33,539 posts)...but we did elect both Chris Christie and Meg Whitman.
The guy who kept his Trump worship to a minimum won. He want's to "fix" New Jersey, presumably with more tax cuts for rich people and more debt to be carried by the poor. If New Jersey is broke, it's because of Meg Whitman, and enhanced by the Trumpist pig Christie, not because of any of our Dem Governors, even the worst of them.
Our current Dem Governor, Phil Murphy is OK with me, ex-Goldman Sachs, but OK.
From my perspective, NJ is the best State in the Union, and I never want to live anywhere else, but one thing about the State is we're spectacularly bad at selecting Governors.
The last Governor we had who I really, really, really admired, except for the brief interlude where our (now modified) Constitution put Senate Leader Richard Codey - the best of New Jersey but unelected - in the office briefly, was Jim Florio.
Phil Murphy is, however, not a bad guy, maybe not Jim Florio, but he'll certainly do, especially when the alternative is, by association, a White Supremacist.
