Gov. Greg Abbott: Texas will build border wall amid 'unprecedented crisis'

Source: Austin American-Statesman

Gov. Greg Abbott said Thursday that Texas will build a border wall, although he did not provide details on the cost or location — or how the state would pay for it.

"I will announce next week the plan for the state of Texas to begin building the border wall in the state of Texas," said Abbott, who spoke after meeting with local and state officials in Del Rio about border security.

Abbott held the meeting amid his ongoing dispute with the Biden administration over a recent surge in border crossings, including many migrants fleeing gang violence in Central America and seeking asylum in the U.S. Administration officials on Monday threatened to sue Texas over Abbott's plan to force state-licensed shelters contracted with the federal government to stop housing migrant children.

The governor has placed a heightened focus on the border in recent months, declaring a disaster in counties along the border.

Just looking at the southern border of Texas shows that the Rio Grande twists and turn most of its length. To begin, the US claims half way across that river. Will Abbott cede that property by building a wall in a straight line on the stable ground somewhat north of the river? Of course not. Remember the Alamo!

Can Abbott take eminent domain by walling off ranchers property for being too close to the border? Ask that Bundy guy and his buddies how they feel about that.

That leaves a few miles in western Texas where a security wall already exists. This is a Lone Star equivalent of a chicken in every pot. He must be prepping his re-election strategy by making promises he knows he isn't going to keep.

can say that will move their base, not from ideology but from a marketing perspective. "How can I get more votes?" and because they have no dignity, no shame and the modus operandi is lying, they will come out the next day saying what they think will bring them votes whether they believe it or not.

Because he's losing supporters , and voters are running from him and his failures from the power grid failure, and his idiotic policies he's promoting now. He'll never win another election in Texas, and people are fed up with his antics. This wall thing will backfire badly for him. Abbott's a fraud, always as been.

But it would probably be a patchwork thing, on private property that he seizes via eminent domain or willing ranchers.

Any rancher can put up a "wall" or "fancier fence" than barb wire if they wish..I guess the state will "pay" for it now
Many people travel through ranches in South Texas until they get past the final checkpoint.

There are ranchers who probably would appreciate a better fence than barb wire.

Considering some other areas that affect Texas more, like healthcare and education, Abbott should spend money on those instead of a stupid wall. Texas has the highest percentage of people with no healthcare in the country. And the maternal death rate is also the highest in the country, ranking right up there with some third-world countries. That rate spiked after Republican legislators forced the closure of 81 actual health clinics that provided care for poor women (versus the fake Christian pregnancy crisis centers that provide no healthcare and only tell lies to stop an abortion).

And our energy system needs to be weatherized. They’re supposedly working on that, but given Republican “regulations” I’m not expecting much. A Republican regulation is when you make it appear that you’re doing something to add control when all you’re doing is encouraging greater profits.

Get in line for a home generator. It'll take 3 to 6 months to get one installed, if you're lucky. That's what Texans think of Abbott and what he's going about the next massive freeze.

Abbott can build a wall along the southern border, sure. But he has to stop as soon as he hits the New Mexico state line, as he has no authority there. So all the migrants have to do is go to New Mexico, then turn right and boom, they're in Texas.

Abbott is a whizkid, all right...
