North Koreas Kim calls food situation tense as reports of shortages mount

TOKYO North Korean leader Kim Jong Un has called the country's food situation "tense," state media reported Wednesday, amid mounting reports of shortages.
Opening a plenary meeting of the ruling Workers Partys central committee, Kim claimed the economy had improved this year, with industrial production up 25 percent from a year earlier, and he generally struck a more upbeat tone than in February, when he had admitted the countrys economic plan had failed tremendously.
Nevertheless, Kims admission about food shortages speaks of a problem that cant be glossed over.
Last year, North Korea faced its worst slump in more than two decades, experts say, largely due to the self-imposed closure of the border with China, a measure designed to keep the coronavirus pandemic at bay. There were reports of acute power cuts and factory closures, with coal and fertilizer production hit by electricity shortages and lack of spare parts.

(15,823 posts)I had no idea. So food is probably the main bill people have to spend their money on. Having money but no food to buy would be a huge problem.

They might even help out when you're having shortages like this.
I do feel bad for the people in North Korea that are suffering because of him and his family's regime.

(58,785 posts)of wheat in the face of shortages to have enough for domestic consumption. Only temporarily until summer harvests, but of course it's contributing to hunger down the line in some places. Don't know about NK. (The same article said the U.S. has some of the biggest inventories among the big exporters, as expected in spite of everything.)
North Koreans are no strangers to famine and other existential shortages, of course. For that matter, some Russians living far from sight of Moscow aren't entirely either.

(50,560 posts)The North Koreans own a stockpile of enough food to feed one million people for a year. It belongs to their defense ministry and is intended to feed their army when they decide to go to war against South Korea.
Add that to the food already available to civilians and theyve got enough to get them through the next harvest.
