Russia Condemns United States For Human Rights Record

Source: Reuters

(Reuters) - Russia accused the United States on Monday of double standards on human rights, criticizing its failure to close Guantanamo Bay prison and its use of the death penalty while the U.S. Congress considers a law which could punish Moscow for alleged abuses.

Russia and the United States attempted to "reset" their relations when President Barack Obama entered the White House in 2009, but ties have turned decidedly cooler since Vladimir Putin declared last year he planned to return to the presidency.

Republican presidential candidate Mitt Romney has declared that Russia is Washington's number one geopolitical foe, while Moscow has chafed under recent U.S. allegations that it harbors human rights abusers.

Now two weeks before the U.S. presidential election, the State Duma lower parliament house held a three-hour hearing criticizing its former Cold War foe.

It may be pot-meets-kettle, but the statement about us is still true, and we have no good answer for the allegations they have made and many more they haven't made. Yeah; I'm looking at you Bush and Cheney.

This is bound to happen, and will continue to happen, as
long as Bradley Manning is imprisoned and tortured, until Gitmo
is actually closed down, the drone attacks are stopped, etc.

This is all so elementary, so obvious on it's face. I feel very ashamed
right now to be a citizen of such a fucking duplicitous hypocritical
clusterfuck of a country.

seriously.

I love those brave Russian women singers, and detest their treatment, rather
like the Manning situation in USA.

I just am not clear on what the point of your post was/is.

Manning isn't comparable.

Leah-Lynn Plante was released a day after imprisonment.

You're not clear on the point because you cheer the authoritarian government of Putin simply because if feigns anti-America. Not because it's actually an egalitarian system.

I deplore the injustice in the USA of official retribution leveled against whistle blowers,
who should instead be awarded a medal for exposing our war crimes; and you construe that
to mean ... ipso facto ... that I'm "cheering the authoritarian government of Putin".

Did I get that correct so far?

Can we agree that this is quite a stunning accusational leap of you are making, desperately
trying to put words in my mouth that were never there?

I deplore repression of free speech and assembly where ever, and when ever it occurs: period.
These are the actual words coming out of MY mouth, for the record.

That is all.

Democrats controlled both houses, and we should have shut down Guantanamo Bay Torture camp. But we didn't. We didn't. We had a President who wanted to, but a Congress made up of Blue Dogs who were afraid. What did it get us? We still lost seats in the mid terms. The Rethugs stole the house from us, because IMO, we failed to live up to our promises. President Obama was elected with a clear majority, and a clear mandate to follow through on his promises. Guantanamo Bay was one of those promises we didn't push hard enough on, and we should have.

The Freeper type now claims that Obama didn't want to close it down, because it was HIS secret torture prison now. It hurts our image around the world, and hurts our chances of reaching an understanding with the more moderate leaders in the Middle East. We have a hard time claiming to be good guys with the torture camp open.

I know, it's one of my pet peeves. Between that, and the PATRIOT ACT, I am so disappointed in the Democratic Leadership. What is really disheartening now is we aren't even talking about it anymore.

I feel confident that a huge Democratic sweep of both houses will coincide with Obama's victory and thus allow the Democrats to end the PATRIOT Act and close the Guantanamo Bay camp once and for all.

Russia accusing the United States for our Human Rights Record.

Lets see they just sent some rock and roll girls to prison on some really ugly trumped up charges.

When you send some young women to prison for singing you way crossed the line of intolerance and that's about it.

This world is screwed up way past this minor news.

In plain English we have the best Democratic Society in the World.
