A coronavirus outbreak hit a Florida government building. Two people are dead but not vaccinated...
Source: CNN
Two people are dead and four of their coworkers were hospitalized after a Covid-19 outbreak swept through a government building in Manatee County, Florida.
The outbreak began in the IT department, according to Manatee County Administrator Scott Hopes, who is also an epidemiologist. Another person who worked on the same floor but in a different department also tested positive for coronavirus last week.
Of the six people infected, five were hospitalized. One employee who was in the hospital died and another employee who was not hospitalized also died, Hopes told CNN's Erin Burnett.
The only exposed employee in the IT office who was vaccinated did not get infected, Hopes said.

It is amazing how Florida is sticking to its guns and not requiring masks even following a deadly outbreak.

It is really sad.
He has two young children, and you would think he would want them protected.

(1,156 posts)That state is headed for serious trouble in the coming months with their blind embrace and rush into anti-vax land. Lots more covid spread and death will hit that state in upcoming months.

(10,911 posts)and that 7 day average is a 2% decline from the 7 day average ending 2 weeks ago. That it's declining sounds nice and wonderful and all that, but it's the 8th worst state as far as changing rates (6 states are increasing, and one state is declining less, a 1% decline)
https://www.nytimes.com/interactive/2021/us/covid-cases.html
1,476 daily average new cases (7 per 100,000)
Fully vaxxed: 44% (U.S. average is 45%)

(44,974 posts)It seems a lot worse than the original covid. I am surprise how low the vaccination rate was in that office. One person out of six was vaccinated. The rest are paying the price.

(111,329 posts)The vaccinated employee got infected along with everybody else. The difference is that vaccination jumpstarts the immune system, so the person doesn't get ill. It takes the immune system about 2 weeks to mount an effective defense against a new virus like Covid. That's plenty of time for it to kill.
Do vaccinated people shed live virus? It's unlikely, the immune system slaps it down too quickly for there to be enough live virus to cause disease in them or anyone else.
It looks like the building manager is doing his best, he's just working against a total dunce named De Santis.

(30,816 posts)If the rest of the info is true, that sure is a very high rate of serious disease! Five out of six (unvaccinated) people hospitalized or dead? No wonder India was decimated (assuming it is the delta variant).

(111,329 posts)and that is simply not the case. You can't extrapolate from one small area to the population at large.

(30,816 posts)I'm not an idiot.
The odds of someone in their 50s who is infected with Covid being sick enough to be hospitalized is said to be 8 percent. So the odds of 5 of just 6 people getting seriously ill would be (if I calculated it correctly) 0.0003 percent. Not zero though.
Still, to suggest that the delta variant is more deadly than the other versions after making this observation (not to mention that it was stated to be so by the WHO, who called it the "fastest and fittest coronavirus strain" is not out of line.

(44,974 posts)Out of six people in the IT office, five got infected, and 2 of those died (the rest are in the hospital). One more employee (not in the IT department) also got infected and is in the hospital. The only one not infected was the vaccinated employee.

(111,329 posts)I expect civilians to get confused. People who call themselves medical reporters need to learn the proper terms.
Bottom line, that whole office was infected. Only the person who had been vaccinated didn't get ill. Vaccines allow a rapid immune system response for that particular virus. However, infection does occur, infection signaling the immune system to mount a rapid defense. Without the vaccine, it takes about 2 weeks to mount an effective immune response. We have no immunity to this virus, not even if we've had coronavirus common colds in the past. Vaccinated people who inhale virus will get infected. The immune response will limit the infection quickly and prevent the person from becoming ill.
Bottom line, get the shots. They're not 100%, but they are out best chance for not dying from this.

I've only known a few IT people in my travels, but the ones I've known have been politically conservative and/or leaning libertarian. But maybe I'm wrong.
