Fauci: Delta Variant Accounts for 20% of New Coronavirus Cases in U.S.

Leading infectious disease expert Anthony Fauci on Tuesday sounded the alarm on the delta coronavirus variant, saying it accounts for over 20% of new U.S. infections.

"The delta variant is currently the greatest threat in the U.S. to our attempt to eliminate COVID-19," Fauci said during a press briefing. "The good news: Our vaccines are effective against the delta variant."

He said that cases due to the variant, which was first identified in India, are doubling every two weeks.

Centers for Disease Control and Prevention Director Rochelle Walensky warned that the variant "represents a set of mutations that could lead to future mutations that evade our vaccine."

2. At the store today about 50% had no mask

It did not seem like a good idea.

A woman was in there with three young kids.

None of them had masks on and the kids were running around the store unattended.

With this Delta Variant out there, I for one am still wearing a mask when I go out.

It is plain stupid not to do so.

It amazes me that people with kids as well as others don't seem to care!

The woman seemed to be doing her best to make a show of the whole thing; kids all over the place grabbing packages of stuff while she orchestrated the "show" so to speak.

Sure people comment about it in elevators and in businesses. I don't care. I mostly try to support businesses whose workers wear masks and still take some social distance precautions.

In the U.K., data shows 99 percent of sequenced and genotyped confirmed coronavirus cases across the country are the delta variant, according to Public Health England.

This comes despite the nation's high immunization rate, with 59.5 percent of the adult population fully vaccinated from the coronavirus. A reported 81.6 percent of the adult population have received one dose, according to government data.

Portugal's National Health Institute reported this weekend the delta variant is shown to be in at least 60 percent of new cases in Lisbon. The country reported more than 1,000 new COVID-19 cases for the fourth day in a row on Saturday, according to Reuters.
