Beach club tied to US senator refutes claims its 'all-white'

Source: AP

NEWPORT, R.I. (AP) — An exclusive Rhode Island beach club tied to Democratic U.S. Sen. Sheldon Whitehouse has broken its silence to defend itself from claims that it’s for white people only after the controversy garnered national attention.

Bailey’s Beach Club in Newport said in a statement Wednesday that the recent characterizations are “inaccurate and false,” The Providence Journal reports.

The organization, known formally as the Spouting Rock Beach Association, said its members and their families include “people of many racial, religious, and ethnic backgrounds” from across the globe, though it declined to elaborate.

Jack Nolan, the club’s general manager, told the newspaper the club’s membership information is private.

But figured they meant "FROM", like "Whose families originated in" another place on the globe.

Not very clear, but it makes more sense than "someone in Paris maintains a membership in a US beach club."

It is a deep water port that can accommodate large sailboats. It is also filled with lots of old money mansions (and I am not talking M mansions). So it attracts very wealthy summer people from all over. It is not your normal town. Add in the very small non-white population outside of Providence and an even smaller population of very, very affluent minorities in the state and it's not surprising. I would bet most members of the club do not even live in the state.

And this woman was practically hyperventilating over the story. She said, well, they SAY they have non white members but they say their membership is PRIVATE and they won't RELEASE it so there's no PROOF.

All innuendo, all italics, very middle school gossip about a juicy scandal. All I could think was, how do the right wing propagandists do this? It's a constant barrage of scandals with no evidence. You'd think people would learn but it seems to be extremely effective.

Meanwhile, nobody pays attention to the very real scandals of Republicans. It makes my head hurt.

In their zeal to be "neutral," they have to search for so-called "scandals" against Democrats, without ever looking at how many Republican Senators might belong to exclusive clubs. Does Mar-a-lago have any members who aren't white?

This club probably doesn't have any official policy about the racial or ethnic backgrounds of its members, but due to its location in swanky Newport and the demographics of the area, I could see why it has few minority members.

I'm not defending it, though. The whole idea of "beach clubs" seems like it comes from a different world to me. Most people have no concept of what a beach club is!

Whitehouse does seem out of touch on it, however. It looks bad for him, and makes him seem elitist and out of touch.
